Player Career

Club

The son of a butcher, Sigmar was originally going to continue the work of his father, until he became interested in playing with a ball and began to play for the amateur club "Rammenau." The talented player was discerned by the leadership of Dynamo from Dresden, and in 1965, Wetzlich entered his academy, from which he graduated in 1967, making his debut in the first team.

From 1967 to 1975, Sigmar played for this club, having spent 139 games within the Oberliga and scoring 10 goals. He failed to reveal his talent in full because of the numerous injuries that had plagued him throughout his career. Nevertheless, at the age of 19 at the end of the 1967/1968 season, he was included in the symbolic team of the GDR championship. In the first team he entrenched himself after the injury and retirement of key player Steffen Engelmore . In the place of the central defender, Wetzlih had 26 games, but even his efforts Dynamo could not resist in the Oberlig and flew out of it, because of what they had to play in the Second League.

Because of the injury, Wetzer spent only 17 games, but this time Dynamo managed to survive and return to the Oberliga. In the season 1969/1970, he was injured again and played only 10 matches, and his position as a left back was played by various players. The following season, Dynamo managed to win the championship and the GDR Cup: on June 2, 1971 , another Berlin Dynamo was beaten in the final with a score of 2-1, but for this they had to play overtime. Sigmar was released on the 106th minute of the match, and after 12 minutes, Klaus Zammer scored the winning goal.

In the following seasons, Wetzlih played without injury and firmly secured the position of the left-back at the club. In 1973, the team won the GDR Championship for the second time with Zigmar (he played 20 matches). In the 1975/1976 season, he last played for the team, having spent just 10 games. Trauma meniscus not allowed Vettseru continue his career. The last game of the German was the match on December 20, 1975 against the Leipzig Lok. Nevertheless, Sigmar received gold medals for the third time and became the triple champion of the GDR.

He played 26 games in Euro cups with Dynamo. He played the first match on September 20, 1967 as part of the Fair against the Scottish Rangers Club (the game ended in a 1: 1 draw). The highest achievement of the club during the game of Sigmar was the UEFA Cup semi -final 1972/1973 against its future winner, Liverpool (the return game, which ended with the victory of the Mercy Sears with a score of 0: 1). I also remember the match in the European Cup against Bayern Munich, which ended in a draw 3: 3.

In the national team

At the end of the 1971/1972 season, Wetzlich received a call to the GDR national team to prepare for the Olympic Games tournament, which was to be held in Munich. Sigmar played the first three matches in the tournament (East Germans won the bronze medal under the flag of united Germany). The first official game in the national team was the match against the national team of Ghana in Munich , which ended in victory with a score of 4: 0.

The first and only in the history of the GDR world championship, which was selected their team, was held in 1974. Vezlich also played on him, having spent only one game against Finland in the qualifying round (GDR won 5: 0). Sigmar spent four games (three in the group stage and one at the playoff stage), including the legendary match against Germany , which the German team lost 0-1, which did not prevent her from winning the championship. The last game of Wetzlih, which took place as part of the selection for Euro 1976, was against Iceland and ended with the defeat of the GDR with a score of 1: 2. As in the club, Sigmar played his favorite left-back position.
