Lower East Side ( Eng. Lower East Side ) - a district in southeastern Manhattan .
Borders on Allen Street , East Houston Street , Essex Street , Canal Street , Eldridge Street, East Broadway and Grand Street. It has traditionally been an immigrant, working-class neighborhood, as shown at the beginning of Once Upon a Time in America . In the 2000s, it experienced rapid gentrification , which prompted the National Trust for the Preservation of Historical Heritage to place it on the list of endangered places [1] . Currently, there are many luxury boutiques and restaurants.
