The name of the manga was given in honor of Spica - a double system and the brightest star in the constellation Virgo . The author included in the manga references to historical events related to the creation of manned spacecraft, as well as literary works, such as the novel Night on the Galactic Railroad by Kenji Miyazawa. In September 2009, the American publishing house Vertical announced the acquisition of a license for publishing manga in English, in May 2010 the first volume was published. During the initial assessment, Ed Chavez, marketing director of Vertical , described the manga as "spiritual and true."

Anime was created on the basis of the manga on the Group TAC studio. The premiere took place on November 1, 2003. The show ended March 27, 2004, before the release of manga was completed. On the Animax satellite channel, the anime was broadcast in several language versions, including English. Dorama was created by NHK with the assistance of an aerospace research agency and was broadcast between June 18 and July 30, 2009.

The manga was licensed by a comic book company called Double Speaking . [2]

Creation History

The author of the manga Co. Yaginuma began creating his work in 2000, simultaneously with his debut work in 2015: Fireworks ( jan . 2015 年 の 打 ち 上 げ 花火 花火 2015 Nen no Uchiage Hanabi ) . [3] Yaginuma composed the history of the future regarding the development of space flight programs in Japan. He also introduced readers to the launch in 2010 of the Lion space mission in Japan ( Jap. 獅子 号 Shishigō ) . [4] The mission ended in a catastrophe - 72 seconds after the launch, the launch vehicle fuel caught fire. Operators could not activate the emergency stop, and the rocket crashed in the city of Yuigahama, which led to large losses among residents. [five]

This tragedy became one of the most serious catastrophes in the history of astronautics and forced the Japanese government to suspend space flight programs for a period of about 10 years. After the tragedy, society blamed Lion participants for negligence . Also began to spread rumors that the creation of the ship were involved third-party companies , although the government stated that the rocket was produced exclusively by Japanese creators. [6] To help restore space exploration, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology began the establishment of the National Space School in Tokyo. This vocational school will be dedicated to teaching a new generation of students to the science of space exploration. The Japanese space flight program is planned to be restored ten years after the admission of students to the academy. [7] In the same year, the last operational module of the International Space Station will be stopped and destroyed as it travels through the atmosphere, and thus the station’s long-term mission will come to an end. Subsequent development projects are planned for completion in selected countries with operational space flight programs. [8] Currently, one of the students of the inaugural class of astronaut training has already been selected for the team of the second manned mission, which is scheduled to be held in 2027. [9] At the same time it is planned to launch a satellite of space energy . [ten]

Characters

The main characters of the work are Asumi Kamogawa and her mentor - the ghost of an astronaut of the Lion mission, whom she calls “Mr. Lyon”. [11] Their friendship develops in several short stories; he aroused her interest in space when she was small. Over time, her interest and dreams of space only develop, but Asumi becomes the object of ridicule from classmates, because she often plunges into reading books about space and practically does not participate in class affairs. [12] When she decides to enter the Tokyo Space Academy, teachers strongly advise her to change her mind, as her height is below average. [13] However, Asumi still manages to successfully enter the academy, and her friendship with Lyon continues to grow; she often consults him if she is unsure of something. [14]

To Asumi’s surprise, her classmate Sinnosuke Futuya also enters the academy. He had previously defended Asumi from the mockery of classmates, although from time to time he himself was not averse to teasing her, [12] which was explained by the presence of romantic interest in her. [3] The two of them manage to make friends with three other students of the astronaut training program. Su Suzuki is representative of the class of astronauts, although it has a rather careless character. [15] He shaves his eyebrows as a symbol of disobedience to his father. [16] Kay Oumi meets Asumi during the entrance exams. She is a sociable girl, deeply devoted to her friends. [17] Marika Ukita initially reacts indifferently to friendly gestures, however, at the insistence of her father, she settles in a dormitory where Asumi lives. [18] These five students later promise each other to become astronauts, and their friendship grows stronger. [19] After three years of study, Asumi is elected to participate in the second manned space flight in the history of Japan, [20] thus she will be (she will be 18 years old) one of the youngest people to go into space. [21]

While studying at the academy, candidates for astronauts must overcome multiple physical and mental tests. A background is revealed to readers, in which Asumi's mother died after a catastrophe with Lion , [22] and Asumi's friends are not aware of this until Kay finds an obituary in the newspaper. [23] It appears that Marika is a genetic copy of the deceased Marika Ukita, although human cloning is prohibited. [24] In childhood, Futuya had an accident - he was too close to the fireworks that had worked, and now suffers from color blindness - he does not distinguish between red and green. [25] Su suffers from hemoptysis and dies shortly after being elected as an exchange student for the American space program. [26] This tragedy forces Kay to recognize her feelings, which she has hidden throughout history. [27]

Creation

Writing

Virgo constellation, which appears in the manga

The manga was named after one of the brightest stars in the constellation Virgo called Spica . [28] It consists of two stars, but at the same time, due to the relatively low distance between them (equal to an average of 11 million miles), it looks like one star. The results of astronomical observations suggest that there may be other stars in the Speke system. [29] In the manga, Asumi mentions that the distance from Spika to Earth is 350 light years . [30] The same figure is given by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, [31] but other sources indicate a distance of approximately 260 light years. [32] [33]

The original inspiration for writing the work came to the author allegedly from the fact that he once learned that the harmonica from the company Hohner is one of the first musical instruments that have been in space. However, Yaginuma was just a beginner manga and had no sources to conduct such research. He also hesitated when he began to write manga, because his personal life experience did not reflect the dreams of his characters. Despite the doubts, Yaginuma found for himself a comfortable image of his fictional characters, especially Asumi Kamogawa. [34]

Manga Twin Spica began to be published in October 2001 in the pages of Comic Flapper magazine published by Media Factory , although before that the main character Asumi appeared in the debut work of Yaginumy 2015: Fireworks . This short story was published in the July 2000 issue of the Comic Flapper ; It also includes Asumi’s father, her primary school teacher Yuko Suzunari, and Mr. Lyon. [3] Four additional short stories preceding the manga plot also portray Asumi as the main character: Asumi ( jap. ア ス ミ ) , [35] Campanella's Forest ( jap. カ ム パ ネ ル ラ の 森 Kamupaneruru No Mori ) , Our Stars, Leaf Stars ( jap. ふ た り の 星 は っ っ ぱ ут Futari no Hoshi, Happ Hosi ) , [36] and Asumi's Cherry Tree ( Jap. ス ス ミ の 桜 Asumi no Sakura ) . [37] Collectively, these stories are a prequel to the Twin Spica manga. [3]

Historical references

Manga Twin Spica and its preceding stories contain several references to historical personalities and events related to space exploration. Throughout the manga (as well as the anime), Lyon carries with it a harmonica - one of the first musical instruments found in outer space. [38] In reality, the harmonica and the bell were taken aboard the Gemini-6A spacecraft, which flew into space in December 1965 and piloted by astronauts Walter Schirra and Thomas Stafford . During the mission, astronauts used these tools to perform the song Jingle Bells . [39] In the anime, Su Suzuki gives Asumi the nickname “The Seagull”, [40] which was the call sign of the Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova , the world's first female cosmonaut who flew Vostok-6 in 1963. [41] In the drama, Soo tells his friends that the New Horizon space station was launched to the planet Pluto in order to ship the cremated remains of astronomer Clyde Tombo there . [42] [43] Later, for the first time when going into space, Asumi takes with her the remains of Su. [44]

Also in the manga there are references to real-life literary and musical works. The names of the stories Campanella's Forest and Giovanni's Ticket ( J ジ ジ バ ン ニ の 切 зи зи ни зи связаны связаны связаны ) are associated with the two main characters of the novel Kenji Miyazawa Night on the Galactic Railroad . In the penultimate series of anime revealed that this novel is the favorite book of Marika Ukita. [45] [46] Both in the manga and in the drama, Kay asks Su to play the Dog Waltz on the piano (known as Neko Funjatta in Japan ( Jap. 猫 踏 ん じ ゃ っ た ) ) if he is the first in the group who can fly into space. [47] [48]

Media Editions

Manga

The manga was launched in October 2001 in the seinen journal Comic Flapper . [3] The publication ended on August 5, 2009 with the release of the 89th chapter. [49] The manga was also published in 16 tankes , the last of which was published on October 23, 2009. [50] The stories preceding the manga were included in the publication: two stories are included in the first volume, [35] two others are present in the second volume, [36] and one is included in the third volume. [37] At the time of publication of the manga, the author created three more prequel stories, which were included in the fourth, sixth and ninth volumes, respectively. [51] [52] [53] On March 23, 2006, the Media Factory company released the 80-page book Twin Spica Illustration Book ( Jap. ISBN 978-4-8401-1380-9 , Futazu No Supika Iruutobukku , ISBN 978-4-8401-1380-9 ) , based on manga. The book included a calendar and an interview with Ko Yaginuma. [54]

The manga was licensed by Tongli Publishing for publication in Chinese under the title Dream of Spica (麥穗 星 之 夢). [55] The first volume was released in May 2005. [56] After conducting a three-week contract negotiations [57], the American publishing company Vertical announced the acquisition of a license to issue manga in English translation. [58] The company's marketing director, Ed Chavez, explained the motivation for acquiring a license by the company's desire to publish the work of Japanese publishers, who still do not have proper partnerships with major American publishers. He also invited the company Media Factory to continue cooperation. [59] Random House , a distributor of Vertical , announced [60] that, contrary to the original announcement (which stated that the release date will be May 4, 2010), the manga will be released in August 2010. [61] Chavez later tweeted that Vertical would cut the manga edition to 12 volumes. [62]

Anime

Japanese animation studio Group TAC, based on the original manga, created a 20-series anime adaptation, shown on NHK . The show began on November 1, 2003 and ended on March 27, 2004. [63] [64] The director was Tomomi Mochizuki , and the script was written by Rika Nakase. The character design was created by Masako Goto. [65] By the time the show ended, only 30 manga chapters were published. [66] Chapter 25, which describes how Asumi and her classmates pass the test of their survival skills, was the last one adapted for anime. [67] Consequently, the series ends with the premature departure of Lyon after he realized that he had taught Asumi and her friends everything he knew. In the manga, Lyon appears in the following chapters after the 25th and finally leaves only in the 88th chapter. [68] In addition to Japan, the anime was broadcast in Asia and Latin America via Animax . [69] [70] [71] Anime was released by King Records in VHS and DVD formats in five compilations. [72] A special DVD edition containing flashbacks for the series 1, 5, 9, 12 and 16 was released on May 26, 2004, [73] and the box set consisting of 5 DVDs was released on July 22, 2004 . [74] The two-part anime release and the official handbook for it were published in April 2004. [75] [76] [77] The premiere of the anime Twin Spica in the English dubbing took place on January 24, 2005 on the channel Animax Asia . [78]

Dorama

On March 30, 2009, NHK announced a 7-series show created in collaboration with the national space research agency. The role of Asumi was chosen 16-year-old actress Nanami Sakuraba , who began shooting in the TV series on April 2. [79] The start of the show was scheduled for June 11, but later postponed to June 18. [80] The show coincided with the celebration of the International Year of Astronomy . [81] The series’s screenplay was created by Shuko Arai and Daigo Matsui. [82] At the time of writing the script, Arai was filled with sympathy for the characters who endure many dreams in order to fulfill their dreams. He also called the main theme of the series, dreams and hopes. [83] Among other changes, it can be noted that the series does not feature Lyon, who was the main character in the original manga. [84] Yaginuma had no complaints about Arai and Matsui about this, since he believed that they had a better understanding of the audience. He said: "I believe that Asumi, which I created, and Asumi, performed by Mrs. Nanami, they both look at the same sky." [34] A three-box DVD set was released by Geneon Universal Entertainment on December 23, 2009. [85]

Music

The song “Venus Say”, performed by the pop group Buzy , was chosen as the opening theme of the anime, [65] and on March 3, 2004, it was released as part of two more songs as maxi single . In the music ratings of the company Oricon single for seven weeks held the position in 29th place. [86] The pop group Begin adapted the song Miagete Goran Yoru no Hoshi o ( Jap. 見上 げ て ご ら ん 夜 の 星 を を , “Look at the stars in the night”) by Japanese singer Kyu Sakamoto for the closing theme of the anime. [65] The full soundtrack, which included two main songs and 33 additional tracks from composer Kazunori Miyake, was released on May 26, 2004. [87] Hitomi no Saki ni's song ( Japanese 瞳 の 先 に , “Before Your Eyes”) of the Japanese band Orange Range became the drama's closing composition. She was also released as maxi single , and was in fifth place in Oricon ratings for 6 weeks. [88] The full drama soundtrack, consisting of 21 songs, was released by Harbor Records on August 5, 2009. [89]

Reviews and criticism

In an interview with the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, the Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata called the Twin Spica one of the five manga reflecting the dream of space exploration. [90] During the evaluation of the manga for possible licensing in the English version, the marketing director of Vertical, Ed Chavez, who is a fan of science fiction, found the manga "relevant technical reality" and noted that "this is probably one of the most sincere works that he knows" . [59] He hoped that the manga would occupy a place in the top ten bestsellers among the graphic editions of The New York Times , and believed that it would become "one of the recognizable names of Vertical and deserve recognition by fans of anime and graphic novels." [91] Although the manga was published in the seinen magazine, Chavez thought it would also appeal to shn--mangi lovers; in his opinion, the word seinen in this case means a focus on an adult audience as a whole, regardless of gender. He hoped that Twin Spica would have commercial success, and Vertical would be able to license the classic works of Osamu Tezuka and the Union for 24 years . [57] The first manga volume in English in the journal Publishers Weekly was named one of the most anticipated graphic works of 2010. [92]

Jennifer Berman from THEM Anime Reviews rated Twin Spica anime with five stars out of five possible, but still wrote to the readers: “You can lower this rating if you don’t like this anime.” Berman praised the artistic design and noted that the characters reminded her of the work of Studio Ghibli . She found the characters "attractive" and noted Marika Ukita as the most intriguing character. Despite these positive reviews, Berman noted one flaw in anime adaptation - the closing topic, in her opinion, could have been made much better. [93] Sony Pictures Entertainment Vice President Todd Miller noted that Twin Spica was one of the most suitable TV shows for any audience shown on Animax . [70] The first drama series received a 3.4% hit rating. [81] Observers from Yomiuri Shimbun gave the drama a total average rating and third place among the 11 TV shows shown on television in the summer of 2009. [94]
