Biography

Sam Nill in 2009

Nill was born in the city of Om in Northern Ireland . He became the second son of Dermot Neill, an army officer, a graduate of the prestigious military schools of Harrow School and the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst , a third-generation New Zealander (after the war he served in Northern Ireland), and his English wife, Priscilla. The family owned Nill & Co., a New Zealand liquor company.

Nill and his family returned to New Zealand in 1954 , where he attended the Anglican boarding school for boys - Christ's College Christchurch . After that, he entered the University of Canterbury , where he studied English literature, where he first appeared as an actor. He continued his studies at Queen Victoria University in Wellington , where he received a bachelor of arts degree in English literature.

He was married to New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow , from whom in 1983 he had a son, Tom. And in 1991, he had a daughter, Elena, from make-up artist Noriko Watanabe, whom Nill married in 1989. Nill also has a son, Andrew, who was born when Nill was about 20 years old - he gave the child up for adoption, but years later he found him and reunited with him.

Acting career

After inconspicuous work in New Zealand cinema as a director and actor, Neil got his first major role in the 1977 New Zealand film Sleeping Dogs . Then he starred in the Australian film " My Brilliant Career " (1979), where he played in tandem with Judy Davis . The tape received many prizes and became a classic of local cinema. In 1981, he starred as Damien Thorne in the Hollywood blockbuster Omen 3: The Last Battle . In the late 1970s, the mentor of Nill was the famous British actor James Mason .

After Roger Moore starred in his last James Bond film in 1985, Nill was seen as his replacement in another series of Bond, Sparks from the Eye . On tests, many liked him, including director John Glen , but producer Cubby Broccoli preferred Timothy Dalton to him. In the early 1980s, Nill gained fame in the UK for his roles in several dramas, such as Ivanhoe , and the leading role in the series Reilly: The King of Spies , for which he received his first Golden Globe nomination.

Sam Nill is known for his leading and supporting roles in such large (mostly American-made) films as Dead Calm (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Piano (1993), Sirens (1994), Jurassic Park (1993), Through the Horizon (1997), Plate (2000) and Jurassic Park 3 (2001). Often played Russian ( Enigma , Doctor Zhivago , America). To shoot the final scenes of the film “ Through the Horizon, ” Sam Neill had to get up at 3 a.m., as the make-up took 7-8 hours.

Nill was asked to play the role of Elf Elrond in the movie trilogy “ The Lord of the Rings ” by Peter Jackson , but he refused due to employment in the third part of “Jurassic Park” (2001). The role went to Hugo Weaving .
