“Surfin '” is one of the very first songs of The Beach Boys. On September 15, 1961, in a home studio by Haight Morgan, publisher Murray Wilson (ensemble manager and father of the Wilson brothers), a group (then called The Pendletones) recorded a demo. Even while listening to Morgan a month earlier, the musicians presented a semi-finished version of “Surfin '”, promising to finalize it. The first professional recording took place on October 3 under the direction of Murray Wilson at the World Pacific studio in Los Angeles: Alan Jardine on the double bass, Carl Wilson on the guitar, Brian on the makeshift drum (the bottom of the garbage can), Mike Love performed the lead vocal. Wilson Sr. did not let Dennis play drums, considering him a weak musician. [1] Surfin, Luau, and Lavender were recorded.

The single “Surfin '” with “Luau” on the reverse side was released on December 8, 1961 on the small Los Angeles label Candix Records. Label leaders did not like the name The Pendletones, and they personally, without the knowledge of the musicians, changed their name to The Beach Boys on the record label. [1] Haight Morgan subsequently released the single also on his record - X Records. The single was immediately sent to three local radio stations, where it was continuously played every day. As a result, “Surfin '” led the local charts, and by the end of March 1962 reached 75th place in the nationwide charts for Billboard magazine. By the end of 1961, about 40,000 copies of the record were sold, however, the musicians themselves received from it only 200 dollars each. [one]

30 years later, The Beach Boys re-recorded “Surfin '” for the album “ Summer in Paradise ” (1992).
