I knew him even at the time when I was studying at the academy. He taught us an artillery course and was rightly considered a great master of his craft.
During the period of joint service on the Southern Front, I had the opportunity to once again see this, as well as the amazing courage of Semyon Aleksandrovich. But he did not like to really engage in staff affairs, delve into the documents. I remember asking him once:
- How are you planning an artillery offensive?
He only shrugged his shoulders:
- There, in the headquarters, something is being done. The chief of artillery headquarters will report to you, and I, I apologize, hurry to the troops ...
F. I. Tolbukhin more than once complained:- What is this for the commander of the artillery? Will go to the shelves, and even in the anti-tank, and lives there for days. Whenever he calls, everything is not in place. Such indifference is not always appropriate for the front artillery commander.
