After Yichang, the road crosses the south side of the Yangtze River , and only before Wanzhou returns again to the north side. Of the 377 km of the highway, 288 are bridges and tunnels. Zhang Mei, chief construction engineer, said the road was the most difficult to build in China. The road was put into operation on December 22, 2010. One kilometer of road costs about 9 million US dollars [2] [3]

Connections

From the east, the Ivanovo Railway is a continuation of the Wuhan - Ichan highway (commissioning is expected in 2012). Currently, this stretch of track is provided by conventional railways. [four]

At Lichuan Station, the road connects with the Chongqing-Lichuan High Speed Road , which is expected to launch in 2012. When this road is launched, it will be the best expressway to Chongqing with the opportunity to continue on to Chengdu . Then the trip from Wuhan to Chongqing will take five hours. Previously, this trip required 22 hours. [five]

Prior to the opening of the route to Chongqing, the main movement of passenger flows will go to Wanzhou , where you can continue on the existing railway to Dazhou . From Dazhou, trains run southwest to Chongqing and west to Chengdu . [five]

In parallel, the Chongqing - Wanzhou Intercity Railway is being built 236 km long, which will branch off from the Chongqing - Lichuan road after the Changshou - North station and continue only along the northern side of the Yangtze River without crossing it; commissioning of this road is estimated in 2015. [6] A parallel route began to be built at the end of December 2010 and requires four years [6] , but the pace of construction has slowed [7] .

History

Bridge over the Yangtze at Wanzhou City

The idea of building such a road was expressed by Sun Yat-sen in 1903. However, the design was extremely difficult, and until 2003 the project was not developed. [8] [9]

In mid-2009, bridges, tunnels, overpasses along the Yangtze River were almost completed, and almost half of the road was laid. [10] On August 18, 2010, construction was completed. [8] In November 2010, the road was put into operation. [11] [12] Passenger trains began to run along the Wuhan - Lichuan highway from December 22. [13] From January 10, 2011, Wuhan - Chongqing trains began to run through the Ivan line. [four]
