Biography

Before the war

Holevac was born on August 22, 1917 in Karlovac. There he graduated from six classes of the gymnasium and later joined the revolutionary labor movement. In 1939, he joined the Communist Party of Yugoslavia and the following year, on the recommendation of Ivan Marinkovich, he was elected to the district committee of the Communist Party of Croatia for Karlovac, Kordun and Banje. Thanks to his work, Holevac became quite famous in Karlovac. On March 27, 1941, he organized one of the most successful demonstrations in Croatia.

People's Liberation Fight

Immediately after the start of the war in Yugoslavia, Holevac was engaged in organizing youth combat brigades that began their activities in April 1941. As one of the organizers of the Kordun uprising and a member of the Military Committee, Holevac took part in measures to provide the guerrilla army with weapons for the upcoming struggle. In July 1941, he became one of the leaders of the uprising in Kordun. With the first group of Kordunian partisans, Holevac carried out an attack on the gendarme post and was slightly injured during a clash.

In November 1941, Holevac with a detachment of volunteers participated in the operation to liberate partisan Mariana Cavic , who is under arrest in Karlovac hospital. However, it was not possible to save a friend, because he was already transferred from the hospital. In the ensuing battle, the guerrillas killed two Ustashes and several Italian soldiers, losing one man killed and one wounded. The operation caused serious damage to the reputation of the occupying forces.

In November 2010, a group of citizens demanded a criminal case for this attack on the hospital [2] [3] .

At the end of 1941 Holevac was elected political commissar of the People’s Liberation Movement for Kordun and Banje. After that, he served as political commissar, and then as commander of the Second (Zagreb) Operational District. At the end of 1942, he was appointed political commissar of the First Croatian Corps and held this position until the end of the war.

Vecheslav Holevac participated in many battles in Croatia, Bosnia , Slovenia , as well as in the final operations for the liberation of Istria and Trieste . After the liberation of Zagreb on May 8, he was commander of a unit stationed in the city, and then commander of the military administration of the Yugoslav army in Istria. In 1946-1948 Holevac was the head of the SFRY military mission in Berlin .
