Biography
Kai-Hugo von Brockford was born on February 9, 1915 in Schmargendorf, in Germany, in the family of Judge Count Ludwig von Brockdorf (1881-1938) and his second wife Erica von Spalding (1892-1940). He was the grandson of Count Kai-Lorenz von Brockdorf (1844-1921).
He graduated from the State School of Free and Applied Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg , where he studied with the sculptor Wilhelm Gerstel and worked as a freelance artist. During his studies, he met resistance fighters from a group that was feeding under the direction of sculptor Kurt Schumacher at the Academy of Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg and affiliated with the Red Chapel organization.
In 1937 he married Eric Schönfeld , a member of the Resistance movement in Germany. Soon their daughter Saskia was born. In 1942, due to his participation in the Red Chapel, Kai-Hugo was arrested on the Eastern Front , and then sentenced to four years in prison and enlisted in the penal battalion. The Imperial Military Tribunal found his wife guilty of incitement to high treason and sentenced to capital punishment. During the war, Kai-Hugo was captured by the British in Italy , and remained in it until November 1946 .
After World War II, from 1947 to 1949, he served as secretary for fine arts and museums in the German administration. In 1948, he married Eve Lippold (1909-1994), nee Rutkovskaya, writer and member of the Resistance movement, with whom he settled in Zossen . In 1950 he received a Ph.D.
In 1953, he became the first editor of a magazine in the German Democratic Republic dedicated to the visual arts and published by the State Commission for the Arts and the German Artists Association, but resigned a year later. [1] After he worked in administrative positions in the museums of Dresden and Berlin. He wrote a number of books on the history of art: “USSR and Pre-Revolutionary Russian Painting” (1953), “German Painting” (1954), “Finnish Graphics” (1954).
Kai-Hugo von Brockdorf died on January 17, 1999.
