General Information
In order to reduce the weight of the engine, an aluminum cylinder block and cylinder heads, as well as a plastic intake manifold , were used. Cylinder liners have a Nikasil metallized coating (see below). With the use of design V8 changed the same rods and pistons. [1] The dry weight of the engine is 203 kg.
The M60 engine has four valves per cylinder, two overhead camshafts, driven by timing chains. [1] Each cylinder has its own ignition coil, the fuel supply and ignition angle are regulated by the Bosch Motronic 3.3 system.
The M60 engine was produced in two volumes: 3-liter M60B30 and 4-liter M60B40.
| Engine | Working volume | Power | Torque | Red line | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M60B30 | 3.0 liters (2997 cm³) | 218 hp (160 kW) at 5800 rpm | 290 Nm at 4500 rpm | 6500 rpm | 1992 |
| M60B40 | 4.0 liters (3982 cm³) | 286 hp (210 kW) at 5800 rpm | 400 Nm at 4500 rpm | 6500 rpm | 1992 |
M60B30
For the M60B30 engine, the cylinder diameter is 84 mm, the piston stroke is 67.6 mm, the compression ratio is 10.5: 1. [2]
The 3-liter M60 engine was installed on: E34 530i (1992–1995), E32 730i (1992–1994), E38 730i (1994–1996).
M60B40
The M60B40 engine has a cylinder diameter of 89 mm, a piston stroke of 80 mm, a compression ratio of 10.0: 1. [1] [3] This engine has a forged crankshaft . The 4-liter M60 was installed on: E34 540i (1993–1995), E32 740i (1992–1994), E38 740i (1994–1996), E31 840i (1992–1996), De Tomaso Guarà (1993–1998).
Nikasil sleeves
BMW used nickel forcing liners on M60 engines. When using fuel with high sulfur content (for example, in the USA, Great Britain and South America), the coating material was deformed, which led to a decrease in compression.
Currently, in the USA and the UK, sulfur rich fuels are not used. [4] [5]
