Biography
Born in Portland , Oregon . After graduation, in 1911 he entered the Naval Academy in Annapolis , Maryland . He graduated from the Academy in 1915 with the rank of ensign. Over the next six years, he served on two cruisers, a transport vessel and three destroyers. In 1921–1923 he was an instructor at the Academy. Then, until 1925 , he served on the battleship "California" , and after that he was transferred to the headquarters of the Battle Fleet. From 1927 to 1940 he was a member of the Navy , as well as on the battleship New York and the heavy cruiser Portland . He was a member of the headquarters of the 12th Naval District in California. In 1940 - 1941 he was a senior assistant to the commander of the battleship "Arizona" , and later, with the rank of captain, received command of the light cruiser "Trenton" .
In 1942 he was transferred to the headquarters of the US Navy, and at the end of 1943 he became the chief of staff under the commander of the US Navy in France, Admiral Alan Kirk , participated in the landing in Normandy . He received the rank of Rear Admiral and the appointment of the commander of the landing forces of the Seventh Fleet, in October 1944, commanded the landing of American troops on the island of Leyte . Up until the end of the war in September 1945, he led the operations of US forces in the Philippines. After the war, led the work on demining in the Pacific. By 1948 he commanded the landing forces of the US Pacific Fleet.
In April 1948, he was promoted to vice-admiral and spent the next two years at the naval headquarters. In 1950 he was appointed commander of the Seventh Fleet and led him during the first year of the war in Korea. Commanded landings in Incheon and Wonsan . In 1951, he briefly commanded the First Fleet, and then transferred to serve in the Joint Chiefs of Staff , and then headed the US military delegations to the UN .
From June 1955 he commanded the forces of the Navy on the Atlantic Ocean and the Reserve Fleet. Dismissed from military service in July 1956 with the rank of admiral. He died on May 1, 1983 . Buried at Arlington National Cemetery .
