Stavros Dimas was born in 1941 in Athens, although his family comes from Kenya in Corinth. He studied law and economics at the University of Athens . He received a master’s degree from the University of New York . In 1969 he began working as a lawyer for the company on Wall Street , but the next year he moved to the World Bank .
In 1975, he returned to Greece to take the post of Deputy Governor of the Greek Industrial Development Bank [1] . In 1977, he took an active part in Greek politics as a member of the conservative political party New Democracy [2] . Since then, he has been elected a member of the Greek Parliament ten times in a row. From the very beginning, he was involved in negotiations on Greece's accession to the European Union.
In 2014, he was a candidate of the ruling parties for the presidency, but did not get a qualified majority of votes of members of parliament.
