Geography
Located in the province of Torba . Settlements are located on the south coast of the island. The nearest large settlement called Sola is located 5 km southeast of the center of the volcano. Within a radius of 10 km live more than 3.5 thousand people. The slopes of Vanua Lava are covered with tropical rainforests, part of the soil is used under coconut plantations. A young chain of volcanoes is located along the line from the northeast to the southwest. There are 2 crater lakes: one 300 m wide in the north at an altitude of 730 m, the other 500 m wide in the southeast at an altitude of 690 m. Crocodiles live in some rivers [3] .
Geology and Volcanism
Most of the lava of the volcano emerging from the main caldera of the volcano is old, unlike the other volcanoes of Vanuatu, whose calderas are young or constantly active. The local subduction zone is 15–25 km. The volcano actively erupted, starting from 1841 no more than 4 times, and that one eruption is in doubt. Eruptions were moderate explosive. The last time the eruption took place on August 9, 1965 in the north-west direction of the island from the epicenter of activity, which ended almost a year later. The volcano simultaneously coincided with the activity of the nearby volcano Gaua . The composition of volcanic rocks mainly consists of andesites , basaltic andesites , basalts , picrobasalts , dacites . V. A. Aprodov also pointed out that olivine basalts are present in soils [2] . It is considered an ancient volcano that was formed during the Pleistocene era. The most ancient volcanic formation is the stratovolcano Nger Kwan [4] . A slight activation of fumarole activity was recorded in July 1991 between heights of 300 and 400 meters. Then hot water descended along the slopes to a distance of 300 meters, while the water temperature of the fumaroles themselves remained quite normal - 50 ° C. On January 2, 2014, tremors were recorded 20 km west of Vanua Lava with a magnitude of 6.6 points.
