History
In the "List of Populated Places of the Penza Province" (1869) Kochelay is the official village of 139 yards of Saransk Uyezd. M.Ye. Yevsevyev believes that the locality arose after 1563. In the book “Mordva of the Tatra Republic” about the settlement of Kachelaya, he writes: “Mordva, who lived in Sviyazhsky district before the conquest of Kazan, dispersed to their former uluses in Sura and Moksha soon after settling Russian power in Kazan”. The scientist comes to this conclusion on the basis of linguistic and ethnographic data. He believes that the mocked up mocking of Kachely in language and everyday life has more common features with Kazan Mordovians than with Norchatchatskaya. Other scientists, agreeing with the hypothesis of M.Ye. Evsevyev about the Moksha origin of the village’s population, dispute the fact of the continuous settlement of the adjacent villages of Sabaev, Mordovsky Davydov and Kachelaya only by some Moksha settlers from near Kazan. Archival and linguistic materials also indicate that Prisurye (the territory of Kochkurovsky, Bolshebereznikovsky and Dubonsky districts) was the point of contact between the Moksha, who lived between the Sura and Issa rivers, even before the fall of Kazan. The name is anthroponym. It is based on the pre-Christian name Katsya (Kacel). He was the first settler, the founder of the village. This name is mentioned in the "Book of the letter and patrol of Ivan Usov and Ilya Dubrovsky in 1614." There are still legends about the hero Kachele in the village. One of them in the literary treatment of V. K. Radaev was published in his book Legends and Traditions.
