Born into a Jewish trading family in a small southern Polish town. A six-year-old child played in front of the Emperor Franz Joseph . In 1913 he was transported by relatives to Vienna for music lessons. In 1920 he went to complete his musical education in Berlin, where he studied with Karl Flesch . Since 1924, toured around the world, left a lot of sound recordings. In 1930 he became the youngest professor at the Berlin High School of Music . After the Nazis came to power, he emigrated to the UK, gave concerts again and taught. In 1945 he stood at the origins of the Karl Flesh Violin Competition . In 1957, he visited post-war Poland only once as a member of the jury of the Wieniawski Competition . In 1958 he moved to Switzerland, was a professor in Bern and, concurrently, in Cologne .

Rostal’s repertoire was very broad, but it is believed that the peak of his performing skills is the interpretation of modernist music of the early 20th century - in particular, the Second Concerto for Violin and Bela Bartók Orchestra. Rostal’s repertoire also included alt parts (in particular, the alto solo in the symphonic poem Don Quixote by Richard Strauss).

Sybil's daughter is a British psychologist, wife of Hans Jürgen Aysenck . Grandson - the British psychologist Michael Eysenck .
