History
The territory of Karlstadt lies south of the former city walls of Dusseldorf and began to be built up in the middle of the 16th century . From about the middle of the 18th century, the population of Düsseldorf increased significantly and during the Seven Years' War the city fortifications expanded from the south. Old fortifications were dismantled in 1784 - 1787 .
In September 1787, plans for the development of the southern part of the city were published. This territory is named Karlstadt - the city of Karl - after the Elector of the Palatinate Charles IV Theodore . For developers of Karlstadt, large tax incentives were provided, so by 1790 a dense urban development appeared in Karlstadt. The wealth of the urban development of Karlstadt can be judged by the surviving houses of Nesselrode ( de: Palais Nesselrode ), Wittgenstein ( de: Palais Wittgenstein (Düsseldorf) ) and Spee ( de: Stadtmuseum Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf # Architektur ). There is a weekly bazaar in Karl Square.
Modernity
Today, Karlstadt is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Düsseldorf. The area is teeming with antique and jewelry stores. However, a much more relaxed atmosphere reigns on the streets of Karlstadt than on the streets of the old city adjacent to it.
In Karlstadt, there are a number of museums, theaters and institutes, such as the Heinrich-Heine-Institut Institute , the Ceramics Museum ( de: Hetjens-Museum ), the Film Museum ( de: Filmmuseum Düsseldorf ), the City Museum of Düsseldorf ( de : Stadtmuseum Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf ), Puppet Theater ( de: Düsseldorfer Marionetten-Theater ), Clara and Robert Schumann House Museum.
The most significant architectural structures of Karlstadt are the church of St. Maximilian and the buildings of the company Mannesmann AG .
