Biography
Born February 17, 1892 in the village of Uryupinskaya . His father - Kalistrat Artemov, was a doctor and chieftain. Mother - Matrena Danov, was a medical professional; drew, was interested in theater. There were brothers in the family - Peter, Ivan, Dmitry and sister Anna.
In 1899-1905 he studied at the Novocherkassk Don Emperor Alexander III cadet corps. In 1906-1907 he attended drawing classes in Rostov headed by I. S. Bogatyrev, a graduate of the Russian Academy of Arts, as well as a remarkable artist and teacher, A. S. Chinenov, whose teaching methods were recognized at the world exhibition in Paris. In 1908, Artyomov began to participate in exhibitions of the Rostov-Nakhichevan Society of Fine Arts. In 1911 he held a personal exhibition in Rostov-on-Don, at which he presented about 50 works.
In 1909-1912, he continued his education at the Moscow Art College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in the workshop of K. A. Korovin. Studying in Moscow, Artemov did not break his connection with Rostov and in 1912 participated in the Salon exhibition of paintings organized by Rostov and Moscow artists. In December 1913 he went to Paris on a scholarship received for the successful completion of the school.
Since the beginning of the First World War, August 26, 1914 - enters the 1st Foreign Regiment, participates in battles in Champagne, Prunei-on-Marne. February 10, 1915 seriously wounded, was awarded the Military Cross . He spent many months in a hospital in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, continuing to paint.
In 1920, Artyomov emigrated to Constantinople . In 1921 he joined the Union of Russian Artists Abroad and exhibited in Taksim in the MacMahon Barracks. Here she meets a young artist Lydia Nikanorova, who becomes his friend and love. Returning to Paris in 1922 , he seeks permission for a visa to France and for Lydia.
In 1924 they moved to Corsica, where they were friends with the family of cinematographers Turzhansky and their friend Pimenov, who creates the scenery for the movie. In 1925, George and Lydia joined the Union of Russian Artists in Paris and organized holidays that attracted the interest of Paris. George is engaged in sculpture and writes famous still lifes with fish and landscapes, which will remain quite rare in his work. July 28, 1927 Artemov marries Lydia.
In 1927-1938, Artyomov participated in exhibitions at the Salon of Artists and Decorators. Repeatedly awarded with medals. In 1930, together with Lydia, exhibited in Paris in the gallery "Bridge of Arts", receives a medal in the salon of artists and decorators. Since 1931, he has been actively participating in exhibitions of animal artists in the E. Brandt Gallery in Paris, exhibiting small sculptures. Becomes a member of the animalist association. In the same year, his works were published in the Russian Art magazine, and also exhibited at the international colonial exhibition in Paris at the Palais des Arts. In 1937, Artyomov received the prize of the Paris International Exhibition.
After the death of Lydia ( August 2, 1938 ), he turns to the religious theme and writes “Pieta”, where his wife Lydia is depicted in the image of Christ.
In 1940 , after the entry of German troops into France, Artemov fled south, first to Castelnodari, then to Toulouse. Still working. Creates two panels “Hunting for Lions”, an altar and a stained glass window for the church of Crista Roy in Toulouse. Later he moved to Sorez, where he remained for ten whole years and where he married the artist Jeanne Astr. In 1945, their daughter Maria was born in Sorez.
In 1948, Artemov takes French citizenship. In 1952, with a small daughter and wife, Artemov moved to Revel , where Jeanne had a house. Their workshop became the center of the cultural life of the city.
In the 1960s, his health deteriorated. Georgy Artyomov died on July 9, 1965 in Revel.
