Ray Breslin is a unique person: thanks to his observation, logic and erudition, he can escape from any prison. Together with his colleagues Hachem and Abigail Ross, he works for an independent security company run by Lester Clark. Breslin's job is to test the best prisons in the United States . The conclusions are disappointing for jailers - he escaped from 14 prisons, and even wrote a book about it.

Once the CIA agent Jessica Mayer comes to the company, who offers Breslin to test the illegal commercial secret prison "Tomb" for especially dangerous criminals. Despite the fact that the companions will not know about his whereabouts, because of ambition, Ray agrees to this proposal. He comes up with a new legend and a new name - now he is the Spanish terrorist Anthony Porthos. He is also informed of the on-site contact - the head of the prison, Roger Marsh, the evacuation code, as well as a bug. Then Ray is arrested at a predetermined location in New Orleans . However, the guards immediately find and retrieve a wired bug from it, which is why Khash and Ross lose the ability to track his whereabouts. After this Ray is euthanized.

Ray comes to himself already in the prison, which is completely indoors and consists of small solitary cells with glass walls, and the guards walk in black masks. During a call for interrogation, Ray discovers that he was framed: Roger Marsh does not exist, instead of him the head of the prison is a crazy entomologist - a sadist Willard Hobbs, and his evacuation code does not work.

During a walk, Ray encounters local Muslims and their leader, Javed. Emil Rottmayer, one of the prisoners, who was once the bodyguard of a world-class banking con man Victor Manheim, saves him from a fight. From Rottmayer, Hobbs tries to find out the whereabouts of Manheim. Rottmeyer is friendly to Ray and offers his help if something happens. Ray asks him to help him get to the local detention center. They stage a fight between themselves, after which they are placed in an insulator - a tiny room where huge prisoners shine with huge halogen lamps . Ray notices that the floor in the insulator is fastened with steel rivets . According to the architecture of the prison, Ray guesses that it is underground, and under the punishment cell there is a water supply system, through which you can get out and find out where they are. To do this, Ray asks Rottmeyer to get him a piece of metal, with which you can reflect the light from the lamps and direct it to rivets, which will expand and fly off from the heat. Rottmeier does this. Then they arrange a fight with Javed and end up in a punishment cell, where Rottmeyer pretends to be hysterical, distracting the guards, while Ray uses iron to heat up the rivets and gets into the water supply, getting out through it. However, having got upstairs, Ray discovers that he is aboard a huge ship in the middle of the ocean , and realizing that he will not be able to escape, he goes back to the punishment cell.

Further, Hobbs, at the direction of Lester Clark, tries to break Breslin, ordering the guards to constantly beat him. Despite this, Ray continues to study the habits of the guards. Then he tries to find out from the local doctor Kairi where they are located in the globe, but he refuses to say anything. Then Ray from improvised materials makes sextant , with which you can set only the latitude , but for this the device needs to be delivered outside. At this point, Hobbs decides to isolate Breslin from all the prisoners, but he promises that he will get Rottmayer information about Manheim, after which Hobbs releases him back. In one of his reports, Ray tells Hobbs the false whereabouts of Manheim. Next, Breslin and Rottmeyer ask for help from Javed, promising to help him escape from prison. He tells Hobbs about the impending escape, and in return allows him to hold a prayer in the open air. Using the carried sextant, Javed sets the latitude at which they reside. It turns out that the ship is located off the coast of Morocco . Ray finally manages to persuade the doctor to his side, reminding him of the Hippocratic oath he had given him, and he sends a message to Rottmayer, an influential Moroccan acquaintance.

Further, Hobbs notices how Ray asks Muslims to organize a riot in one of the blocks, after which they increase security. However, Ray, Rottmeyer and Javed, left in another block with thinned guards, organize a riot during which they manage to escape to the utility room and turn off all the CCTV cameras. However, Hobbs manages to lock all the doors, because of which the fugitives cannot get outside through the hatch, and then sends a detachment of guards who find heroes with the help of motion sensors. Ray and Rottmeier engage in a firefight with the guards, in which Javed is seriously injured. Locked in one of the rooms, Ray turns off the motion sensors. Then he orders Rottmeyer to climb up, and he goes to the engine room to turn off the power system and unlock the doors. Guards following him, led by Hobbs, kill Javed. However, Ray manages to break into the engine room and turn off the ship. Rottmeyer crawls out onto the deck, where at that time his friend’s helicopter arrives, from which they begin to shell the ship and the guards. One of the shooters is killed and Rottmeier takes his place.

Meanwhile, Ray, hiding in the engine room, waits until the compartment is filled with water and its discharge system works. Thus, Ray falls into the open ocean, where he is seen from a Rottmeyer helicopter, which drops his rope ladder. Hobbs, who appeared at that time on deck, opens fire on a helicopter. But Ray fires a flammable liquid from a pistol dropped by Rottmeyer, resulting in an explosion that kills Hobbs. After that, the helicopter flies off and lands on the coast of Morocco.

A car with two of Rottmeier's henchmen and Jessica Meyer drives up to the fugitives who have landed on the beach. It immediately turns out that Rottmeyer is Victor Manheim, and Jessica is his daughter. It turns out that she intentionally sent Breslin to prison to get her father out of her. Ray also learns from Jessica that it was Lester Clark who organized his imprisonment in prison.

Breslin learns from Abigail that Clark betrayed him and he was offered to lead the entire network of the Tomb, if Ray proved that the prison is invulnerable, failing to escape from it. It also turns out that Clark was hiding. However, Khash finds him in Miami and puts him to sleep in a car. When Clark wakes up, he finds himself locked in his car inside a container on board a container ship .

The idea of ​​co-starring in a film has been discussed between Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger for many years, since the mid-1980s. Various versions of the script were written, but, according to Schwarzenegger, their shooting schedules did not coincide with Stallone. After Schwarzenegger took the post of governor, and then played a cameo role in the movie The Expendables , they returned to the idea of ​​working together.
