Song Shilun was born in 1907 in a peasant family in Lilin County, Hunan Province . In 1921 he entered the county high school, since 1923 he worked in Changsha . April 13, 1926 entered the Wampu Academy in Guangzhou . In January 1927 he joined the CCP , participated in the Great Campaign , commanded the 30th Army Group, and the 28th Army Group. During the resistance years of Japan, he was the commander of the 716th regiment of the 358th brigade of the 120th division of the 8th army , then during the civil war he commanded the 9th corps of the 3rd field army .
During the Korean War, Song Shilun was the deputy commander of the Chinese people's volunteers and the commander of the 9th CPV corps, it was his troops who surrounded the division of the American Marine Corps during the battle of the Chosin Reservoir .
In 1952, Song Shilun was returned to China and became the head of the Higher Infantry School. In November 1957, he became the first deputy director of the PLA military research institute. During the years of the Cultural Revolution, he was subjected to repressions; he was able to return to work only in October 1972, becoming the director of the PLA military research institute. In 1977-1980, he headed the Committee for the Preparation of Troops of the Central Military Council of the PRC . Since 1980, he joined the editorial board of the Great Chinese Encyclopedia, coordinated work on volumes devoted to military affairs, and he himself wrote a number of articles.
Song Shilun was a delegate to the NPC of the 4th and 5th convocations, a member of the State Defense Committee of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd convocations; at the 12th and 13th congresses of the CPC he was elected to the Advisory Commission under the CPC Central Committee .
