Story
Vampire David Talbot calls on the witch Merrick, a member of the secret society of Talamask, whose leader Talbot was earlier, with a request to call the spirit of the dead vampire girl Claudia for his friend Louis de Pont du Lac . Claudia was Louis's adopted daughter, and he cannot recover from her murder by members of the former Vampire Theater, led by Arman . Merrick agrees.
The main part of the book is occupied by the memoirs of David Talbot about the acquaintance with Merrick, which happened even before his conversion to Lestat de Lyoncourt , their joint adventures in the jungle , as well as about the deceased friend of David Heron Lightner. Talbot talks about Merrick's youth and her life with a color branch of the Mayfair family , about her mother Cold Sandra and the older sister of the Honey Drop in the Sun.
Merrick evokes the spirit of Claudia. Claudia accuses Louis of his death and tries to kill him, but she does not succeed. The affected vampire then tries to commit suicide , but Lestat saves him. Together with Merrick, turned into a vampire, and David, they leave the city.
Reviews
Matthew Flamm, a critic of The New York Times , wrote that the book has little connection with the rest of the series and that “Rice seems to be writing now exclusively for her fans.” [2] Rebecca Asher Welsh, in Entertainment Weekly, rated the novel at 3 and sharply criticized the language of the book, writing that “Rice writes as a person who studied English many centuries ago” [3] . On Amazon.com, the work has a rating of 3.4 out of 5 possible [4] . In 2001, the novel was nominated for the Lambda Prize as the best science fiction novel dedicated to LGBT people [5] .
