Ed's secondary role is to act as a crisis negotiator in direct contact with objects. Ed owns weapons well, but often worries that he needs to use them to save his life.
There is a wife, Sophie, and a son, Clark. Ed had problems with his family due to his attachment to the GSR. In the first episode of season 4, Ed was injured when he was traveling to give birth to his wife. But, despite this, he was with her, although he himself needed medical help and could lose his arm. After the birth of Isabelle's daughter, Ed wants to resign, but Sophie says he can stay in Group One if he spends more time with his family.

Roy is fired from the police, and Ed does not want to help him, saying: "I have no time." Roy replies, "You never have one." When Group One reacts to the shots in the house, they find Roy there, who contacted the arms dealer (3x5). Dismissed from the police, suspected of stealing $ 100,000, Roy infiltrated the arms dealer, as a buyer, to take revenge on the man who sold the weapons from which his partner was killed and to prove that he was a good officer. Roy leads Ed and GSR to the arms depot. Saving Jules, he gives himself out and they shoot him. Roy survives since he was wearing body armor. Ed says that he didn’t know that Roy was like that, but he would put in a word for him and he could return to work.
After Ed was forced to shoot an eighteen-year-old girl, he experiences serious psychological problems and a complex of guilt. And only when the psychologist forces him to accept the whole burden of guilt for the perfect "neutralization of subjects", Ed realizes that he can return to work. He was well received by the members of Group One, although at first he had to take down their jokes and bring coffee. After training, he becomes a valuable member of Group One.
