Usage

The Esperanto alphabet uses diacritics for all of its four postalveolar consonants , similar to the Slavic languages based on the Latin alphabet. Letters and digraphs denoting the same sound that the letter Ĉ transmits include Slovenian č , Polish digraph cz , English and Spanish combination of ch , as well as Italian c before i and e .

Ĉ - the fourth letter of the Esperanto alphabet. Although it is written as cx in the x- transliteration system , in fact it is a C letter with circumflex. If it is impossible to write a character with diacritics, Ludwik Zamenhof , the creator of Esperanto, recommended using the combination ch . However, such a replacement conflicts with some European languages, for example, ch in Italian Italian. chiaro corresponds to the velar syllable consonant [1] ; Zamenhof attached importance to the readability of the text for speakers of European languages and invented the symbol just to overcome the situation in which ch is read as ĉ in English, ŝ in French and ĥ in German [2] .

Ĉ is one of the letters (and sounds) that linguists do not like in Esperanto: speakers of many languages find it difficult to pronounce and spell [3] , it is not included in Ido , a descendant language of Esperanto [4] .
