Childbirth

Childbirth of literature is a large association of verbal and artistic works according to the type of attitude of the speaker (“speaker”) to the artistic whole. Three genera are distinguished:

  • drama
  • Lyrics
  • epic .

This division is elevated to the "Poetics" of Aristotle :

You can imitate in the same and the same thing by telling about the event, as about something separate from yourself, as Homer does, or so that the imitator remains by itself, without changing his face, or representing all imaginary persons acting and active

However, Gerard Genette, in his Introduction to Architects, calls this popular opinion “a retrospective illusion” and shows that in reality it is an aesthetic concept of the 18th century (primarily Abbot Batteux ) that unreasonably appeals to the authority of Aristotle :

The relatively recent theory of the “three main literary genera,” having appropriated so distant ancestors, not only ascribes to itself an ancient origin, and therefore is endowed with the appearance or presumption of eternity and thereby self-evidence, but also brings up under its three literary genera that natural foundation, which was developed by Aristotle, and before it by Plato , for completely different things and, probably, with great right.
