Biography

Eva Ortiz was born on January 11, 1961 in Las Vegas , Nevada , and in 1979 moved to Los Angeles in the hope of building a rock star career. She joined the Speed Queens group and played in it from 1980 to 1982. Speed Queens split up without ever recording a single track, Eva and bassist Sandra Ross found Super Heroines . The band fit into the evolving death rock scene of Los Angeles [1] . Around the same time, Eve met Razz Williams , who had recently founded Christian Death . Eve took part in writing and recording the album “ Only Theater of Pain ”, which had a huge impact on the entire death rock scene. [1] Super Heroines released several albums, and after Rick Egnu left Christian Death, Rozz invited Eve to join her band as a guitarist. Super Heroines recorded their last album, Love and Pain, in 1983, which, however, was only released after 8 years, and split up.

In the mid-80s, Eva began to solve personal problems and spent a lot of time with Richard Ramirez , with whom she was in close relations. For several murders in San Francisco, Ramirez was convicted and sent to prison. Soon, Eva restored relations with Rozz, after which they founded the Shadow Project , in the 90s they released two albums. They described their music as "a strange mix of metal death rock and punk." It was after the release of the second album, “Dreams for the Dying,” that Eve and Rozz began to make a big bias towards more gloomy and depressing themes, which were a reflection of the inner struggle of their personal lives. Although Eve never considered herself an official member of Christian Death, her participation in this group and in the Shadow Project gave her the title of Queen of Darkness. [2]

Christian Death reunited and released two more albums. The Shadow Project went on their last tour after recording their live album “In Tuned Out”.

After breaking up with Rozz and completing the Shadow Project, Eva began her solo career and collaboration with Cleopatra Records in 1993. The recording of the first album used material Speed Queens, Super Heroines and Christian Death, as well as three new solo songs [2] . In 1994, she began working on her second solo album, which she originally intended to call Angels Fall for a Demon's Kiss, but after some religious studies, she eventually converted to Christianity, re-recorded and renamed the album Demons Fall for an Angel's Kiss. " Producer Johnny Indovina noted that the album was more restrained and calmer compared to its previous hard and wild material. [3]

After numerous changes and remixes, Eva completed her work on the album “Damnation (Ride the Madness)” in 1999, and in 2005, according to its results, “Damnation / Salvation” was released on the German death metal label Massacre Records . "Damnation / Salvation" is a detailed chronicle of Eve's path from occultism and Satanism to Christianity. The album was repeatedly banned from distribution in the United States due to its theme. Eva emphasizes that people should listen to the entire album in order to understand its meaning, and not judge by the cover, track list and text of the first few songs.

14 years after converting to Christianity in 1993, rumors appeared that Eve had begun to depart from her faith. In the summer of 2007, in the issue of Deathrock magazine, the author Philip Henken wrote in the article “History O” about Eve: “When I ask her about the conversion to Christianity, she tells me that her rebirth is behind.” Eve said in an interview:

I have no problem with Christianity. I just can’t follow this path. Even if you think, religion is angry ... Humanity is corrupt, everything it touches. But I was raised by a Christian and I have no problems with this. But I know the way, and I'm not going to give my life to Christ. This is my way and I want to keep it. I want to be honest.
