Foundation History
The name of the union surprisingly coincides with the line from the Polish couplet of the International, which by that time had not yet been written [1] :
Bój to jest nasz ostatni,
Krwawy skończy się trud,
Gdy związek nasz bratni
Ogarnie ludzki ród!
The union was founded in Vilna by the impoverished noblemen Frantisek and Alexander Dalevsky . At first, it included A. Yankovsky, K. Mayevsky , V. Klechkovsky, E. Iodko, K. Dobkevich. At first, the union brought together student youth. In 1848, raznoshintsy, artisans, petty gentry joined it [2] .
Union Objectives and Program
The program put forward the requirements of Poland’s independence and the declaration of a republic, the abolition of all class privileges, the liberation of the peasants and the endowment of their land.
Members of the union campaigned in Vilna, Novogrudok , Lida , Slonim and other cities, tried to attract the soldiers of the Bobruisk fortress and the Minsk garrison. On April 5, 1849, an uprising was scheduled. The conspirators counted on the imminent start of the Russian-Prussian war [3] .
The defeat of the Brotherhood of Lithuanian Youth
On March 27, 1849, arrests began, and about 200 people were brought to the investigation. 17% of them were artisans, 25% - students. The rest are from petty Polish gentry. Leaders and the most active members are sentenced to death, replaced by hard labor from 10 to 15 years. Many members of the union subsequently participated in the Polish uprising of 1863-1864 .
