Biography
Born September 10, 1923 in Lisbon in the family of Alfredo Enrica Andresen da Costa ( port. Alfredo Henrique Andresen da Costa , born November 4, 1893) and Maria Helena Nobri ( port. Maria Helena Nobre , born 1895) [1] . In 1946, he graduated from the Technical University in Lisbon and in 1948, continuing his studies abroad, received an additional diploma in London. In 1950, at the age of 27, Nobri da Costa began his career as an engineer and manager at the enterprises of the Portuguese group Champalimo , one of the seven largest monopolies in the country. He led the production of cement plants in Tagus, Cabo Montague and Leiria. In 1962, Nobri da Costa left the Champalimo group and took up the post of technical administrator in the steel company Siderurgia Nacional, but in 1965 he quit thence to take part in the creation of Champallimaud Lusotecna. At the same time, he took over as administrator at the EFACEC Electrical and Electronics Corporation. In 1972, he was elected Chairman of the SACOR Gas and Energy Campaign Council and held this position until the Carnations Revolution in 1974 [2] /
He was known in the country as a capable and effective manager [3] and in 1976, when the country's economic situation became critical, the military authorities brought him to work in the government. On September 19, 1976, at the invitation of Admiral Pinheiro de Azevedo, Nobri da Costa joined the VI Provisional Government of Portugal as Secretary of State for Heavy Industry. In July 1976, the socialist Mariu Suaris appointed him Minister of Industry and Technology in the first constitutional government. Nobri da Costa worked in this post for a year and a half, until in January 1978 the government resigned after the parliamentary crisis [2] .
Prime Minister
After the second constitutional government, Mario Suaris, resigned after the collapse of the ruling coalition, Portuguese President General António Ramalho Eanish on August 9, 1978 instructed Alfred Nobri da Costa to form a cabinet as an independent politician not affiliated with political parties. After 20 days, on August 29, the government took the oath, but on September 14, the Assembly of the Republic did not approve the government program. On October 25, Carlos Albert da Mota Pinto was appointed Prime Minister. [4] The government of the presidential initiative lasted only 85 days and resigned on November 22, 1978.
After resignation
In 1980, Nobri da Costa supported the candidacy of Ramalia Eanish for the presidency and became a member of the committee in his support [3] . He returned to the EFACEC Corporation and was its president until his death [2] .
Alfred Georges Nobri da Costa died on April 2, 1996 in Lisbon after a long illness, as the representative of the company EFACEC informed the press [5] .
