History

Earlier, on the site of the Cossack cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, there was a stall garden that separated Trinity Cathedral from the Metropolitan House.

The very first burials at this place date back to July 1917 , when the Cossacks who died during the dispersal of the Bolshevik demonstration were buried in front of the porch of the Trinity Cathedral. Because of this, the resulting cemetery was first called Cossack.

The official date for the creation of the Cossack cemetery was considered to be December 1919 : then the burial places of the writer A.M.Dmitrevskaya, the secretary of the Petrocommune S.M. Scriabin appeared, as well as the mass graves of the participants of the defense of Petrograd during the Civil War . Later, in 1921, a mass grave of victims of the Kronstadt rebellion appeared .

During the 1920-1930s, many participants in the revolutionary movement, the Civil War, party functionaries of the CPSU (b), security officers, and militiamen were buried in the cemetery. For this reason, a new name for the cemetery appeared - the Communist site. In the 1930s, the cemetery acquired a status character. Prominent scientists ( N. Ya. Marr , B.V. Legrand , M. Ya. Basov ), industrial organizers (L. L. Ginter), outstanding doctors ( I. I. Grekov , G. A. Ivashentsov , S.P. Fedorov , M.I. Astvatsaturov ), public figures. After 1934, the number of burials began to decrease, and in 1938 they temporarily ceased.

The second wave of burials occurred during the years of World War II . Then a large number of graves appeared of participants in the battle for Leningrad, both civilian and military (generals A.I. Shmai , B.O. Galstyan , I.F. Nikolaev , A.E. Fedyunin , admirals V.P. Drozd , N I. Zuykov , Yu. F. Rall , Heroes of the Soviet Union N. A. Kozlov , P. A. Pilyutov , M. N. Plotkin ).

Burials on the Communist site continued into the post-war decades. The last burial in the coffin occurred in 1970 , in the future there were only the burial of urns with ashes (including uncontrolled ones).

Tombstones of the cemetery differ in significant architectural diversity. Researchers identify up to 19 types of these structures, including obelisks , pillars , sarcophagi , crosses , steles , portico , bust , etc.

In 2005, the monument "The Triumph of Orthodoxy" was erected in the cemetery, erected in memory of all those who suffered for the Orthodox faith - the clergy and laity. The monument is a large Novgorod cross, designed by E. Solovyova .

By the end of the 20th century , 449 burials were preserved in the cemetery, while the total number of people buried here is estimated at approximately 700 people. Given the fact that the number of members of the CPSU (b) - CPSU buried here is no more than 200, the name of the necropolis "Communist platform" was not correct. In addition to atheistic burials, there are 28 graves with Christian crosses in the Lavra cemetery. In 2009, the cemetery returned the name of Cossack [1] [2] [3] . In September of the same year, reconstruction of the Cossack cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra began. Work is underway on landscaping, paving paths.
