Biography
Born in the Greek-populated city of Seleucia Sidera , located in the northern part of the historical region of Pisidia in Southwest Asia Minor (near the modern city of Egridir ). Before coming to power, he headed the financial department of the empire, was the logician of the genikon , hence the nickname “Genik”.
He came to power as a result of a coup d'etat , overthrowing Empress Irina - the last representative of the Isaurian dynasty . He pursued a tough fiscal policy. He resettled peasants from Asia Minor to the European part of the empire.
He tried to limit the power of the church, although he adhered to icon veneration . At the same time, Nicephorus was tolerant of iconoclasts and Pavlians , which caused discontent among the Orthodox party and especially the monks.
He died in the battle of Vyrbishsky passage with the Bulgarian Khan Krum . From the emperor’s skull, the khan made a feast bowl trimmed with silver.
