“In the Fog” is a film directed by Sergei Loznitsa , based on the story of the same name by Vasil Bykov . The film participated in the main competitive program of the 65th Cannes Film Festival , where it was awarded the special FIPRESCI prize . Commenting on the decision of the Cannes selectors, film critic Andrei Plakhov noted that in the new film Loznitsa, whose previous film “ My Happiness ” was ambiguously perceived in Russia, “there is nothing particularly shocking as well as anti-patriotic.” According to the critic, the picture "In the Fog" is sustained in the genre of "existential drama on partisan material" [2] .

Story
1942 , Belarus occupied by German troops. During the investigation of the train derailment, the Germans arrest four lineman . Three of them were executed, and the fourth, Sushchenko, was released for unknown reasons. Local residents begin to suspect him of collaborating with the invaders. Two partisans, Burov and Voitik, take Sushenka into the forest at night, where they are going to kill him as a traitor. However, at the place of execution, not having time to carry out their plans, they are ambushed by the invaders, who used Sushchenko as a bait to catch partisans. Burov is seriously injured. Sushchenka drags him on himself and soon meets Voitik, they begin to make their way to the partisans.
From the flashback, it becomes clear that the Germans offered the arrested Sushena to become their secret informant, but he refused. He tells Burov that even his wife Anelya began to doubt whether he was a traitor, and he himself would have preferred to be executed with the others.
The next day, while Voitik walks to the nearest village to get a wagon, Burov dies. There are no supplies, because the Germans are in the village. (Another flashback showed that one winter, Voytik, having met policemen on the road, betrayed the peasants from whom he took food and they were shot.) Sushchenya offers not to leave Burov’s body and continues to carry it. Voytayk warns that in the squad Sushchenu is not expecting anything good, but that one already has no choice.
The fog is coming down. Sushchenya and Voytik have to cross the highway to move on, but the Germans are nearby. Sushcheniya with Burov’s body crosses the highway unnoticed, but Voitik is noticed and killed by the police.
In the thick fog of Sushchenya, next to the bodies of Burov and Voitik, he takes a Nagan from the overcoat of Burov. The fog completely hides what is happening. A shot is heard.

Reviews
From a review of the film in the Session magazine :
The film “In the Fog” by Sergey Loznitsa, awarded the FIPRESCI Prize in Cannes and won the difficult competition in Ples, seemed old-fashioned, almost Soviet to some critics. Meanwhile, it is in this “old age” that his courage and modernity are manifested [3] .
