Biography

Born in 1947 in the village of Maltsevka in the Kursk region. At the end of eight classes of Mokrushan secondary school, he left for Kharkov , where he entered a technical school and took up wrestling.

He achieved his first successes in sambo , having won a bronze medal at the USSR Championship in 1968, the next year he became the second, and a year later became the USSR champion. Since 1970 he moved to judo. After two victories (Tbilisi 1970, Poland 1972) and one third place (Poland 1971) he was included in the national team for the 1972 European Championship, where he became the second in the individual championship and the European champion in the team.

Speaking at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , he fought in the category of up to 70 kilograms. In his category, 26 athletes fought, divided into two groups. The wrestler who won in all the bouts of the group went to the semifinals, where he met with the wrestler from another group, who reached the semifinals according to the results of the “comforting” fights. In the “consolation” fights there were those wrestlers who lost to the winner of the group: for example, the loser wrestler “B” in the first bout wrestler “A”, in the second bout (provided that wrestler “A” won his second bout) he fought with the loser “A”, and if he won, then continued to participate in the tournament until the “A” wrestler lost, and if the “A” wrestler went to the semifinals, then “B” wrestler also went to the semifinals. Thus, the possibility that strong wrestlers were eliminated in the first fights was excluded.

In 1/16, Anatoly Novikov did not fight, defeated Raul Fallon ( Mexico ) in 1/8 by a painful technique, defeated Gerold Jungviert ( Austria ) in 1/4 by a painful reception [1] and went to the semifinals, where he lost to the obvious favorite of the tournament Toyokazu Nomura ( Japan ), the future Olympic champion. In the battle for third place, the Soviet judoka defeated Engelbert Dörbrandt ( Germany ) and won the bronze medal [2] [3]

In judo, after the Olympic Games in Munich, Anatoly Novikov again became the European champion in the team, and won third place at the 1973 World Cup. After that I moved to the weight category up to 80 kilograms, won prizes in international tournaments. [four]

Graduated from Kharkov Pedagogical Institute , teacher. In Kharkiv, the All-Ukrainian Judo Tournament among young men for the prizes of Anatoly Novikov is annually held.
