Sestrin-1, or SESN1, (also known as the "p53-activated gene 26"; eng. P53-activated gene 26, PA26 ) is a cytosolic protein of the sister family, a product of the SESN1 gene. Identified in 1994 as one of the genes activated by the transcription factor p53 . [one]

Structure
Sestrin-1 is synthesized in three variants (T1, T2, T3), which consist of 551, 491 and 426 amino acids , with a molecular weight of 68, 55 and 48 kDa , respectively.
Function
Sister family proteins are small proteins synthesized by a cell in response to a stressful situation. It is an activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and an inhibitor of TOR protein kinase, the so-called “target of rapamycin”. Both regulated protein kinases are important components of the signaling mechanism, which serves as the central regulator of aging processes. [2] Sestrin 1 has been suggested to play an important role in preventing the proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts. [3]
