Birds with a body length of about 25 cm. Colorful plumage of a rusty hue with white and black patches. Nest mainly on sea coasts. They arrange nests on the ground, in the form of a pit with scanty lining. A clutch of 3-4 motley eggs is incubated by both parents for 21-23 days. The beak is strong wedge-shaped, with which the birds turn pebbles in search of insects and worms, and therefore the birds got their name. They feed on small invertebrates, which are found among the pebbles, and algae thrown ashore.
Black Kamensharka is found only in the west and south of Alaska and is distinguished by a darker plumage. Both species are migratory birds that winter in Africa, South Asia, South America and Australia.
