Window to Europe (film festival)

In 1993, by the collective decision of filmmakers Savva Kulish , Marlene Hutsiev , composer Mikael Tariverdiev , documentary filmmaker Vladimir Konovalov , producers Gevorg Nersisyan and Andrei Simonov, a cinema forum was organized in Vyborg for those who continue to shoot films during this economically difficult period. The "Film Market Festival" (the initial determination of the status of the event) is being approved and approved by the Goskino . The Druzhba Hotel, the Victoria International Business Center and the Vyborg Cinema are becoming centers of the festival. Starting next year, the tradition of mass joint procession of festival guests and residents - from the hotel to the cinema - is emerging.

One of the publications about the IV festival (1996), entitled “The festival said goodbye to childhood,” symbolized the show going to a new level. Festival President Savva Kulish commented ^[1] :

Today, both the organizers and the audience felt that the festival had found its feet, a reliable residence ... Vyborg is a cinematic city, there are wonderful on-site venues. Now it is awarded with awards, it receives support for all the best that is shot in Russia ...

In 1998, another tradition was born: the Walk of Fame festival opened, in which Stanislav Rostotsky , Vyacheslav Tikhonov , Anatoly Romashin , Georgy Zhzhenov and Alexei Petrenko left the first handprints. Starting from the 1999 festival, a nomination called “Vyborg Account” is introduced. Both the professional jury from among the participants and guests of the festival, and the audience participate in the vote. In 2006, at the end of the competition program, the jury meets openly. Each participant expresses his point of view about the past program and the general situation in Russian cinema.

According to the current regulations, the founders of the festival are the Russian-European Film Association (REKA), the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Leningrad Region. The president, general producer and general director of the Festival lead the preparation and conduct of the forum. In addition to the panorama of new Russian films and various retrospectives, the following contests are held as part of the main program:

• feature films (10-15 films, 7-9 members of the jury award the prize "For the best feature film" and special prizes )
• non-fiction full-length and short films (3-4 members of the jury award prizes “For the best non-fiction film” and Special prize )
• animated full-length and short films (3-4 members of the jury award the prize "For the best animated film" and the Special Prize )
• “Vyborg account”, which includes all the films of the festival’s game competition, as well as films awarded with awards from other Russian film screenings held between the past and the present festivals. Summing up is carried out under the guidance of the Board of Trustees based on the results of the competition with the Golden Rook Prize.

The opening film of the XII festival was the work of Renata Litvinova, “ The Goddess: How I Loved ”. In total, about 60 paintings are presented, including 13 games. The jury of the game competition was headed by Alexei Uchitel, the documentary film contest - Sergey Miroshnichenko , the animation - Mikhail Aldashin . The competition program for the feature film of the XIII festival “Window to Europe” included 14 films. The jury of this competition was headed by Sergey Ovcharov , non-fiction films - Vladimir Gerchikov , animation - Vadim Zhuk . The “Window to Europe” festival celebrated the 110th anniversary of cinema, the 30th anniversary of Ilya Averbakh 's film “ Foreign Letters ”.

2006

Different programs show more than 60 films. Chairman of the feature film contest Ilya Gutman . At the XIV festival, for the first time after the completion of the program, an "Open Jury Session" is held: each member of the panel of judges publicly expresses his point of view regarding the festival program. Anniversaries: 40th anniversary of Stanislav Govorukhin's “ Vertical ” painting, 50th anniversary of Grigory Chukhrai’s film “ Forty-first ”, 30th anniversary of Larisa Shepitko’s film “ Ascent ”. Another feature is the appearance at the festival of a whole clip of works by young directors. A Russian-Finnish film-documentary seminar is being held: watching and discussing new Finnish and Russian films, a round table of Russian and Finnish documentary filmmakers: “Russia - Finland: A Step Toward”.

2007

The program of the XV festival consisted of more than 80 paintings. The chairman of the jury of the feature film competition, Kirill Razlogov, noted: “The program was uneven, but it was uneven at any film festival. And I agree with those who say that if there are five or six paintings a year that can be taken seriously, this is a good year ” ^[2] .

Several anniversary dates were noted: 100 years since the birth of actress and teacher Tamara Makarova ; 85 years since the birth of director Stanislav Rostotsky (was for several years one of the leaders of the festival); 20th anniversary of the movie " Midshipmen, go! ", The 15th anniversary of the film by Pyotr Todorovsky " Anchor, another anchor! ".

2008

Thirty-five feature films took part in the competitive screenings (chairman of the jury Vera Storozheva , 21 animated films ( Eduard Nazarov ) and 30 non-fiction films (Vladimir Konovalov), more than 18 thousand spectators attended the shows. A tent is located next to the main festival cinema Vyborg Palace, which houses digital cinema: Thanks to this, the program of non-fiction films is almost doubled.

2009

The festival terms were reduced by three days (according to journalists - due to the economic crisis ) ^[3] , but the program did not become less saturated: competitive and out-of-competition shows, creative meetings, presentations. One of the important events of the XVII festival was the film action in memory of Viktor Tsoi “The Last Hero. Twenty years later. ” In total, more than 40 works by Russian filmmakers were presented.

2010

11 films participated in the main feature film competition, including "The Stoker " by Alexei Balabanov, "In the Jazz Style" by Stanislav Govorukhin, "For Children Under 16 ..." by Andrei Kavun and other works. The jury was led by director Andrei Khrzhanovsky . The grand closing of the festival, which, as usual, took place in the old Vyborg castle, presented the public with many surprises. The film "Inadequate People" 26-year-old debutant Roman Karimov delighted the audience and the professional jury.

2011

The motto of the XIX festival is “Russian Cinema. Forecast for tomorrow. " In total, the competition program of feature films, the jury of which was headed by Mikhail Agranovich , was attended by 14 films, including Boris Godunov by Vladimir Mirzoyev and Land of People by Sergei Govorukhin. The festival celebrated several anniversaries: the 70th anniversary of the director Roman Balayan , the 25th anniversary of the film "Plumbum, or The Dangerous Game."

The main prize of the festival was first awarded not to the film, but to the actor. Peter Zaichenko received it with the wording “For outstanding acting skills” in two competitive films “ Siberia. Monamur ”(director Slava Ross ) and“ House ”(director Oleg Pogodin ).

For its experience and prestige, Rossiyskaya Gazeta called the festival an unofficial, open Russian film championship ^[4] .

The anniversary of the XXth film festival was opened by the head of the Vyborg region Gennady Orlov, reading out the greeting of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, noting the creative traditions and creative atmosphere of the Vyborg film festival. Gennady Orlov added that over twenty years the film festival has changed the city and its inhabitants, having developed their addiction to high-quality cinema. The jury of the feature film competition "Autumn Premieres" was headed by director Roman Balayan, the jury of the non-fiction movie writer Yuri Polyakov , the jury of the animated film competition was directed by Oleg Uzhinov . The opening film of the festival is The Horde , directed by Andrei Proshkin ^[5] . Closing film - “ Love with an Accent ” directed by Rezo Gigineishvili . The festival celebrated the 60th anniversaries of Karen Shakhnazarov and Vladimir Khotinenko, whose paintings (" Dreams " and " Makarov ") shared the main prize at the first festival in 1993.

The chairman of the jury of the Autumn Premieres program is Sergey Shakurov (jury members: Lev Anninsky , Ksenia Kutepova , Sabina Eremeeva and Andrey Kavun ). The chairman of the jury of the non-fiction film competition is writer and television presenter Andrei Maksimov , and animation film is directed by Natalya Dabizha . Within the framework of the 21st film festival, the 75th anniversary of the president of the Window to Europe festival Armen Medvedev , who presented the opening film of the Grandfather 005 festival (directed by Mher Mkrtchyan, Arkady Grigoryan), was co-produced by him ^[6] . The program "Jubilees" celebrated the 25th anniversary of the film " City of Zero " directed by Karen Shakhnazarov . The chairman of the jury of the Autumn Premieres program is producer Igor Tolstunov ^[9] (jury members: director Larisa Sadilova , actors Agrippina Steklova and Kirill Pirogov , film critic Yuri Bogomolov ). The chairman of the jury of the non-fiction film is director and screenwriter Viktor Lisakovich (members of the jury: director Lyudmila Stanukinas , film critic and television journalist Sergey Sholokhov ). The chairman of the jury of the animated film competition is the poet Yuri Entin (jury members: actress Irina Muravyova and director Elizaveta Skvortsova ). This year, for the first time, a program of films created in co-production of Russia and other countries, “Fiction. Копродукция» Жерар Депардье представил ленту « Виктор » совместного российского и французского производства режиссёра Филиппа Мартинеса ^{[12] [13]} . Фильм закрытия фестиваля — « Две женщины » Веры Глаголевой по пьесе И. С. Тургенева « Месяц в деревне » с Рэйфом Файнсом в одной из главных ролей.

Жюри игрового конкурса возглавил кинорежиссёр Сергей Урсуляк . В состав жюри вошли кинооператор Дмитрий Долинин , актёры Агния Кузнецова и Евгений Ткачук , кинокритик Леонид Павлючик и режиссёр Арсений Гончуков . В жюри документального конкурса вошли кинорежиссёры Карен Геворкян (председатель), Наталья Гугуева и Алексей Тельнов. В жюри анимационного конкурса вошли режиссёры Алексей Дёмин (председатель), Светлана Филиппова и Алексей Лебедев .

Открывал фестиваль фильм «Жили-были мы» режиссёра Анны Чернаковой, сценарий к которому написал Александр Адабашьян . Он же был художником фильма и сыграл одну из ролей. Фильмом закрытия фестиваля был «День до», состоящий из новелл режиссёров Александра Котта , Владимира Котта , Александра Карпиловского и Бориса Хлебникова .

Фильм закрытия — «Сын», режиссёр Слава Росс . Картина была снята как мини-сериал (четыре серии) для Первого канала, но на Первом канале сериал так и не вышел. Его показали в Латвии и Казахстане. Из отснятого материала студия смонтировала полнометражный фильм.
