Life and Family

Sadek Larijani is the son of Ayatollah Hashem Amoli and the brother of Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani . Fluent in 3 languages: Persian , Arabic and English .

Education

According to the leading human rights activist in Iran [5] Mohammad Seyfzadeh, the head of the judicial system of Iran should be an ayatollah with great experience in this field. However, Larijani was neither an experienced lawyer, nor a high-ranking clergyman, and until his appointment to the post he bore the title “Khojat ol-Islam”. [6]

Views

Sadek Larijani owns the statement that the government does not receive legitimacy from the voice of the people. [7] He criticized ex-president Mohammad Khatami and his reforms. In March 1998, in an article published in the Sobh newspaper, Larijani attacked Khatami for his call to the civilized Islamic society and philosophy of Abdolkarim Sorush . [8]

Larijani stated:

“We stand for a society based on the spirit of Islam and faith, in which Islamic and religious values are promoted, every prohibition of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet and imams are being implemented. This is a society in which service to God Almighty will be carried out everywhere, in which people will not defend their rights before God, but will be aware of their obligations to God. " [9]

He also criticizes people - such as Abdolkarim Sorush - who argue that as long as a Muslim society or civilization exists, there can be no such thing as an Islamic society or civilization and that Islam is part of a person’s private spiritual life, not ideology. [10]

Judicial system

  • Soon after taking office, Larijani appointed Said Mortazavi, Deputy Prosecutor General of Iran. For more than seven years, Mortazavi served as Prosecutor General of Tehran, during which he took part in the killings and torture of Iranian citizens. One of the most high-profile cases involving Mortazavi is the assassination of Canadian photojournalist of Iranian origin, Zahra Kazemi.
  • On September 7, 2009, Iranian police, with the permission of the judicial system and the Tehran General Court, broke into the office of the organization to support political prisoners and, among other things, seized all documents and computers. The police refused to issue a receipt for these things. The office was owned by Mehdi Karrubi and Mir-Hossein Mousavi and was opened to support torture victims in Iranian prisons. [eleven]
  • On September 8, 2009, the Iranian Justice Department sealed the office of the National Trust Party, and its organizers, Mortez Alviri and Alirez Beheshti, as well as several close associates of opposition leaders Mehdi Karrubi and Mira-Hossein Mousavi, were arrested. [12] [13]
  • In the same month, justice began to harass the children of opposition leaders. So, Atefe Imam, the daughter of imprisoned activist Javad Imam - the head of the Musavi headquarters - was arrested on September 9, 2009. She was detained in an unknown place and tortured to knock out a “confession” denouncing her father. She was released only after 24 hours and was left in unsatisfactory condition in southern Tehran. EU Sanctions

On March 24, 2012, Sadek Larijani was included in the list of persons under EU sanctions for human rights violations. According to the EU ruling, “the head of the judiciary must sign each qisas (punishment), hodoud (crime against God) and ta'zirat (crime against the state) and be punished. This applies to death sentences, vice of prisoners and amputations of limbs. He personally signed many death sentences that are contrary to international standards, including stoning (16 are currently awaiting execution), hanging, executions of minors, and public executions, such as hanging prisoners on bridges in front of thousands of people. He also allowed corporal punishment, such as cutting off limbs and burning eyes of prisoners with acid. With the appointment of Sadik Larijani, head of the judiciary, the number of arrests of political activists, human rights defenders and members of minorities has increased significantly. Since 2009, the number of executions has increased. Sadik Larijani is responsible for the systematic violation by Iranian justice authorities of the right to a fair trial ” [15] .
