Symbols

The double (patriarchal) cross symbolizes the Christian cross , which has been used since the 9th century in Byzantium , and was brought to Slovakia by Cyril and Methodius .

Three mountains symbolize Matra , Tatra and Fatra , a region that has long been inhabited by Slovaks . Three mountains appeared on the coat of arms around the 13th century; they finally became entrenched in the 14th century; starting from 1848 they were depicted as azure (blue). Today, only Fatra and Tatra Mountains are located on the territory of Slovakia, and Matra is located on the territory of modern Hungary .

Coat of Arms History

The Byzantine double cross was first used in Hungary as a sign of the Principality of Nitra , after as the oldest Hungarian sign and symbol of Christianity. Since the 15th century, the coat of arms has been used as a sign of the Upper Hungarian, that is, Slovak lands. Since 1848 it was used by patriots as a national Slovak sign.

In Czechoslovakia, the coat of arms was part of the single Czechoslovak coat of arms. In 1960, the double Slovak cross was removed from the Czechoslovak coat of arms and replaced by a shield depicting Mount Krivan and a partisan bonfire as a symbol of the Slovak popular uprising .

In 1990, the old coat of arms was restored as the coat of arms of Czechoslovakia. In 1992, after the division of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the modern coat of arms was approved. By tradition, the Slovak coat of arms (but with a mountain of green, not blue) is still the right part of the Hungarian coat of arms - from the time when Felvidek, that is, present-day Slovakia, was part of Hungary.
