Composition

Creation date - 1503 year inscribed barely visible at the bottom edge of the image on the right. At first glance, watercolor is not a part of a natural meadow. The point of view is very low, so the picture could not be created in nature (a real meadow). Probably, the studio appeared in the studio, perhaps the herbs were studied by the artist separately and depicted separately. The center of the composition does not coincide with the geometric center of the picture. The viewer's eye follows the light, plastic leaves of plants from right to left. Swampy soil is conveyed by wide brush strokes with dark paint. The lower part of the composition is balanced by thin stems of grass, directed upwards. Individual herbs are shown completely with exposed roots. The motif of open roots appears in other works of Dürer, for example, “ Knight, Death and the Devil ” (1513). The random arrangement of herbs, combined with the careful reproduction of the details of each individual plant, gives the picture more realism, a white background organizes and organizes the composition [3] .

The hedgehog , plantain , veronica , yarrow , daisy and dandelion are depicted in watercolor.

The humanist Konrad Celtis compared the works of Dürer with the literary works of the medieval philosopher and scientist Albert the Great . Like Albert, Dürer laid the foundation for his work observing nature [4] . This study, later praised by art historians for realism, was not an end in itself for Dürer; such drawings were created by the artist, honing his skill, and he used them later, including repeatedly in his works [5] . Replicas of the “Big Piece of the Meadow” can be seen both in his paintings and in his engravings, such as, for example, “ Adam and Eve ” (1504) [6] .
