Usedom Island, separated in the west from the mainland by the Penestrom Strait
The Penestrom is 20 km long and connects the Gulf of Szczecin with the Baltic Sea itself . The six-kilometer section from the lagoon to the mouth of the Pene River strictly speaking does not belong to the Penestrom, and is called Der Strom ( German: Der Strom ).
Under the influence of winds from the Baltic Sea in Penestrom, powerful currents can occur that carry sea water to the lagoon and beyond.
Through Penestrom there are two drawbridges - in the area of the city of Usedom and in the area of the city of Volgast .
