Use
- In Landsmålsalfabetet, the sign is used to denote the longitude of a sound [1] .
Unicode
In Unicode, there is a combining symbol “ combining macron below ” ( ◌̱ ) (U + 0331), with which you can compose characters with a macron below. In addition, there are already several ready-made letters with this diacritical sign: ḇ , ḏ , ẖ , ḵ , ḻ , ṉ , ṟ , ṯ, ẕ .
This symbol should not be confused with other symbols: the shorter minus below is “ combining minus sign below ” (U + 0320) and the longer underline “ combining low line ” (U + 0332). The difference between the bottom macron and the underscore is that in the first case the consecutive letters do not form a solid line from the bottom, and in the second they form: a̱ḇc̱ and a̲b̲c̲.
It should also be noted that in Unicode, ready-made letters with a macron below, as opposed to a combined symbol, are called “with a line below” (“ with line below ”), and not “with a macron below” (“ with macron below ”).
