Biography

Born in the village of Bryukhovetskaya, Krasnodar Territory . He studied at secondary school No. 1 and graduated in 1950 with a gold medal. He graduated from the North Caucasus Mining and Metallurgical Institute with honors. His fate is inextricably linked with the Zaporizhzhya Titanium-Magnesium Plant , where he was a smelter, assistant foreman, site manager, workshop head, deputy chief engineer, chief engineer, factory director (since 1966). During its operation, the plant successfully developed the production of sponge titanium, magnesium, titanium ingots and semiconductor materials. For the first time in the country, under his leadership, the production of the largest ten-ton titanium ingots at that time was created and a technology for producing high-purity magnesium was developed on an industrial scale.

Member of the CPSU since 1960 [1] In 1972, V. S. Ustinov became deputy minister of non-ferrous metallurgy of the USSR, and in 1989 - first deputy minister of metallurgy of the USSR [2] . While working in these positions until the end of 1991, he made a great contribution to the development of titanium-magnesium, rare-metal, semiconductor, electrode and carbon-graphite, carbide industry, powder metallurgy and metal processing. Particular attention was paid to the development, creation and organization of the release of new materials used in mechanical engineering, radio-electronic and defense industries.

V. S. Ustinov was a doctor of technical sciences, professor, full member of the Russian and International Engineering Academies [3] . The author of more than one hundred scientific works and inventions, including four monographs on titanium metallurgy.
