Biography

He graduated from the University. Adam Mickiewicz in Poznan, Department of Polish Philology ( 1969 ). In 1967 - 1971 he was a member of the editorial board of the literary magazine Strezhen ( Polish. Nurt ). He made his debut in the book of poems. Correction of the face ( 1968 ). Member of the PUWP (1967-1969). In 1973 he received a doctorate in philology, defending a dissertation on the work of Miron Bialoshevsky .

He signed the Protest Letter of 59 ( 1975 ), entered the Committee for the Protection of Workers , which is why in 1977 he was suspended from teaching and dismissed from the university. Active participant in the human rights movement. He taught at clandestine universities in Poznan and Krakow .

Since 1980 - Member of Solidarity , returned to university. Since 1981 , after the introduction of martial law in Poland, he lived and worked abroad. He taught at Harvard [5] . He was one of the founders of the Parisian literary magazine Zeszyty Literackie ( 1983 ), from 1986 - 1990 he was a member of the editorial board of the quarterly magazine The Polish Review in New York . Member of the Association of Polish Writers.

Sister - writer Malgozhata Muserovich. He suffered from Parkinson's disease .

He died on December 26, 2014 in Newton [6] , and was buried on January 3, 2015 at the cemetery in Cambridge [7] .

Creativity

The largest representative of the new wave in Polish poetry of the 1960s. Prominent translator from English, German, Russian into Polish and from Polish into German and English. Among his translations are Shakespeare and the metaphysical poets , Jan Kokhanowski (translated into English co-authored with Sheimas Heaney ), Hopkins , Emily Dickinson , Thomas Hardy , Eliot , Mandelstam , E. E. Cummings , Elizabeth Bishop , Auden , Paul Celan , Wislava Shimborskaya and Zbigniew Herbert (in English), Sheimas Heeney, Brodsky , Gorbanevskaya and others.
