Hartwig's father is a Russian mother from a family of Germans who worked at the Glass factory of Riting. In 1940, Nikolai Hartwig entered the Leningrad Flight School. Soon, Hartwig's father was repressed, he was expelled from school, and at the beginning of World War II he fell into the penal battalion . He fought on the Leningrad Front until the end of the blockade , was awarded the medals " For Courage ", " For the Defense of Leningrad ." He finished the war as an officer and after demobilization he returned to his native village, where he began to work as a physical education teacher at Siverskaya secondary school. Hartwig began playing in the local football team, where he was spotted and invited to Zenit .
