History
The history of the Znamensky Cathedral begins in the 1st half of the 17th century. (1624-1659), when the first prayer building was built here. It burned down during a major city fire in 1697, and a second church was built in its place, which also died during a city fire in 1766.
The building of the third church, already stone, began to be built on September 1, 1768 under the same name - in the name of the Icon of the Sign of the Divine Matter . It was consecrated 33 years later on September 9, 1801. According to another version, the year 1786 is considered the year of completion.
The first building of the stone church, painted white, consisted of the main temple, a narthex with a bell tower, a refectory and a porch. The chapel in the name of John Chrysostom was warm for winter services, and Znamensky was intended only for summer.
After 20 years, the building fell into disrepair, and in 1820 it was renovated. In 1821, instead of a wooden fence, a stone was built with cast-iron grates and two gates. In 1839, a stone foundation was poured under the church instead of the sagging old one.
Since August 8, 1848, for the deliverance of citizens from cholera in the church, the celebration of the Mother of God was held.
In 1850 the church was again repaired at the expense of parishioners. At the end of the XIX century. the chapel of John Chrysostom burned down and was again rebuilt in 1901 by the Yekaterinburg merchant M.I. Ivanov. A dome was built above the refectory, the bell tower was increased by 1 tier. In 1913, a celebration was held in the church in honor of renaming the Church of the Sign from the parish to the cathedral.
After the Revolution of 1917 and the establishment of Soviet power, clergymen were persecuted. December 16, 1929 Znamensky Cathedral was closed, its building was transferred to the city club of athletes, although cadets settled there, and the property of the church was transferred to the state. The cathedral building was also used as a transit prison and as a tractor station .
In the period 1933-1941. the church was again handed over to believers, but with the outbreak of World War II, the cathedral was again selected, and military personnel were stationed here. Once again, the church was returned to believers on October 9, 1945 according to the Decree of the Council of People's Commissars No. 1325 of November 28, 1943 "On the Procedure for Opening Churches"
On June 19, 1994, a religious procession was held in the cathedral for the first time in many years. In 2003, the cathedral was replaced by donations from parishioners to replace the domes and crosses.
