History
It was founded in 1871 by the Athenian Music and Drama Society. Initially, the institution taught to play only two musical instruments: the violin and flute. It is significant that piano lessons were not included in the program. In 1891, the new director of the conservatory Georgios Nadzos , who himself received a musical education in Germany, expanded the curriculum of the conservatory by introducing a modern Western European style. In 1893, an orchestra was organized at the conservatory, which in 1911 stood out as a separate structure, which today exists under the name Athens State Orchestra .
Among the musicians who taught at the Athens Conservatory are Manolis Kalomiris , Elvira de Hidalgo . Among the graduates of the conservatory there are also many outstanding personalities of world music history: Spiridon Samaras (1882), Maria Kallas (1938), Dimitris Mitropoulos (1919), Gina Bachauer , Frasivulos Georgiadis , Nana Muskuri , Stavros Xarchakos and Mikis Theodorakis .
