Early elections of the mayor of Astrakhan were scheduled in connection with the termination of powers of Sergei Bozhenov . The election of the mayor of Astrakhan was held on March 4, 2012 at the same time as the election of the President of Russia , in connection with which the counting process was recorded on video cameras installed in the polling station. According to the official results of the vote count, it was announced that the representative of the United Russia party Mikhail Stolyarov received about 60 percent of the vote and was elected mayor, and the representative of the Just Russia party Oleg Shein received about 30 percent of the vote.

Oleg Shein did not recognize the election results and stated numerous violations in the counting of votes recorded by observers. In addition, Shein noted that in most polling stations equipped with ballot processing complexes ( KOIB ), as well as exit polls, he was ahead of Stolyarov. In order to achieve the cancellation of the election results, Shein had to go to court and prove violations at more than 51 polling stations, but in his opinion, going to court had no prospect without video recordings. The results of the previous elections in 2009, in which Shein also participated, were, in his opinion, also falsified, but the appeal to the court did not lead to a result. In addition to falsifying election results, Shein announced the high criminalization of the city and city administration officials.

On March 16, Oleg Shein , a former candidate for mayor of Astrakhan, and a group of his supporters went on an unlimited hunger strike demanding a repeat election; the headquarters of the hungry are located in a public reception on Sovetskaya Street.
