Biography
Born in an aristocratic, wealthy, intellectual family. His father 4] was the great-grandson of another Robert Herbert - the younger brother of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke [5] . George's mother was a friend and patroness of John Donne , his elder brother Edward himself was a prominent poet and philosopher- deist . Father died when George was three years old, leaving a widow with ten children. George studied at Westminster School, then at Cambridge Trinity College ( 1609 - 1613 ). From 1618 he taught rhetoric in Cambridge , in 1620 - 1628 he was a public speaker of the university. Since 1624 - Member of Parliament . Jacob I patronized him and his career, but he soon died. In 1627, Herbert's mother died, John Donne delivered a funeral sermon over her.
In 1630, Herbert became a village priest in the Beamerton parish, 75 miles from London . In 1633 he finished the Temple poetry book. Already seriously ill, he also compiled a practical guide for priests. Died of tuberculosis , bequeathed the manuscript of the book Temple to Nicholas Ferrer, founder of the Anglican religious community in Little Giding ( Huntingdonshire ). In the same 1633, his book was printed and, until 1690, withstood 8 editions.
Herbert also wrote poetry in Greek and Latin.
Posthumous fate
Herbert's first biographer was Isaac Walton .
In the Church of England, Herbert is counted among the saints, the day of his memory is February 27.
He had a great influence on Coleridge , Hopkins , T. S. Eliot . Herbert’s poems were composed by Henry Purcell , Ralph Vaughan-Williams , Benjamin Britten , William Walton , Judith Weir , Nikolai Korndorf and others ( [1] ).
