Thirukkovil ( Eng. Thirukkovil , there. திருக்கோவில , Sinhala. තිරුක්කෝවිල් ) is a city on the east coast of Sri Lanka . It is the capital of the Tirukkovil OS division of Ampara County in the Eastern Province. It is located 30 km north of the city of Pottuvil and 35 km south of the city of Kalmunai . From Tamil, the name of the city is translated as God's temple . The city was hit hard in 2004 by the Indian Ocean tsunami .

Previously part of Batticaloa County. This place is famous for the ancient Tamil temples and other objects of the cultural heritage of Tamil culture. There is a temple of Murugan Sri Sithravalayutha Suwami Kovil. Also in the city is a large educational institution - National College of Thambiluvil (TMMV).
Tyrukkovil was seriously affected by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Due to the tsunami, many residents of the city lost their property, including houses, cattle and rice fields. People returned to normal thanks to the help of the government and non-governmental organizations.
