Mullaytivu there. முல்லைத்தீவு , Sinhala. මූලදූව ) is a small town on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka , the capital of Mullaitivu County in the Northern Province . Formerly a fishing village. At the beginning of the 20th century, it began to develop as an anchorage for the small sailing ships engaged in the transport of goods between the cities of Colombo and Jaffna . In the city there is an office of the district secretary , a number of other state institutions and schools located both in the city and in the surrounding area.

The city was controlled by the LTTE and has been in the theater of many battles since 1983 during the Civil War . The city was a large military base of Tamil rebels. It was badly damaged by the tsunami in 2004 with great casualties.
The Sri Lankan army took control of the city on January 25, 2009 during the Battle of Mullaytiva during the offensive against the LTTE.
