The Open Content Alliance is a consortium of organizations and companies whose goal is to digitize library collections and place them in the public domain (as an alternative to the Google Books project).
The consortium was created in 2005 by Yahoo and the non-profit organization Internet Archive . Later, Microsoft joined the consortium; by 2008, over 1 million books were digitized with its help, of which 300 thousand were included in the Open Library project. In addition, a large number of universities and commercial institutions have joined the consortium.
