Piltun Bay is the Gulf of the Sea of Okhotsk off the eastern coast of Sakhalin Island .

The largest in the chain of bays of the Northeast coast of Sakhalin (about 56 km from north to south and about 12 km from east to west in the widest place). The maximum depth of the main part of the bay is about 1.5 meters. The lagoon type bay is separated from the sea by an oblique and communicates with it by a narrow shallow strait. The entrance to the bay ( strait ) is located in the south. Rivers and streams flow into the bay: Kadylany , Paromay , Piltun , Sabo . The name comes from the Nivkh language as "thumb."
Piltun Bay is important for maintaining near-water birds during autumn migration. The bay is also an important feeding ground for gray whales .
