Canon EOS-1D C is a professional Canon EOS DSLR digital camera with an 18.1MP sensor. Introduced on April 12, 2012, even before the Canon EOS-1D X came on sale, and together with the EOS-1D X it combined two lines at once: a reporter's EOS 1D and a studio full-frame EOS 1Ds . The main difference between 1D C and 1D X was the ability to shoot video in 4K format (with a resolution of 4096 × 2160). [1] [2]

The start of sales of the camera was scheduled for March 2013, the pre-announced cost is 15,000 US dollars (in contrast to the declared cost of the Canon EOS-1D X at 6,800 US dollars).
The camera uses a full - frame CMOS format matrix (36 × 24 mm) with an effective resolution of 18.1 million pixels. This made it possible to provide faster data acquisition from the matrix and increase photosensitivity , but in part only for photographs. When recording video with a resolution of 4K (4096 x 2160 pixels ), the image is formed using the framing function: part of the image is read from the center of the full-frame sensor in the APS-H size - part of the photosensor is used with linear dimensions 1.3 times smaller than that of the 35 mm frame, which leads in turn to the crop factor , also with a coefficient of 1.3. Allows you to output uncompressed video signals in resolutions up to Full HD (1920 x 1080) in 8-bit YCbCr 4: 2: 2 format via HDMI when recording at 24p or 25p without downscaling in Motion JPEG . Direct recording to CF cards is possible in 8-bit 4: 2: 0 MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 IBP or ALL-I. [3] [4]
In November 2013, Canon announced that the 1D C was the first DSLR camera to receive HD Tier 1 certification from the European Broadcasting Union and be recognized as suitable for HD TV broadcasting. [5]

Model Features
Together with the Canon EOS-1D C, you can use more than 60 lenses from the Canon EF line, while Canon Log Gamma supports logarithmic gamma correction to expand the dynamic range of the recorded material, [7] which allows you to store more information in the most advanced stages light and darkest areas of the image, and at the post- production stage to produce better color correction of the material.
An extended range of ISO sensitivity from 50 to 204800 units can be set automatically or manually, which allows you to shoot both in bright sunshine and in almost complete darkness. [8]
There is a function of mirroring the image on the main LCD screen when transmitting a signal via HDMI , which allows the operator and the focus puller or one operator to conveniently work together during broadcasts . Additional benefits during shooting are the Jack 3.5 mm microphone input and Jack 3.5 mm headphone output. [9]
The 1D C uses the same battery as the 1D X , LP-E4N. [10] As with all other Canon full-frame digital full-frame SLR cameras, the 1D C does not have a built-in flash; in its place is a microphone jack. [3]
The EOS Utility and Picture Style Editor software allow the user to configure and control the camera remotely using a computer via a USB cable or Ethernet network cable. [3]
Like the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and Canon EOS-1D X, there is a 61-point autofocus system, as well as a 100-kilopixel sensor for matrix exposure metering in 252 areas, complemented by a face detection system. [11] The viewfinder has a magnification of 0.76x with 100% frame coverage. [eleven]
The WFT-E6 wireless file transmitter (versions A, B, C, D, and E are available) allows you to wirelessly control the camera, transfer files to a computer via FTP, to DLNA-compatible TVs. It also allows you to start shooting on slave cameras and exchange data with GPS devices via Bluetooth version v2.1 + EDR . [12]

- Nikon D4S - $ 5,996.95
- Nikon D5 - $ 6,496.95
- Blackmagic Design URSA 4.6K - $ 6995
- Canon EOS C300 - $ 6999

Known Issues
The cameras with the following known defects are subject to recall or free warranty repair:
- autofocus is performed, but AF lock on the subject does not occur
- the image in the viewfinder looks “blurry” or “fuzzy”
The cause of such problems may be uneven application of lubricant to the drive mechanism. This applies to cameras that have a sixth digit “1” on the left in the serial number. In this case, check the presence of the mark on the battery compartment: mark “A” or the black mark on the silver mount. [13] If the camera’s battery compartment contains one of these marks, the camera cannot have the problem described above and the camera does not need to be repaired. The grease was correctly applied during production. [fourteen]
Price
The camera was announced with a price of $ 15,000. On February 1, 2015, Canon reduced the price of the EOS-1D C by $ 4,000 from the previously set price of $ 11,999. The new recommended cost was $ 7,999.
Benefits
The Canon EOS-1D C was the first DSLR camera capable of shooting 4K video. The Canon EF bayonet mount provides wide compatibility with a large number of lenses.
Weaknesses
The main competitive disadvantage is the price of the camera. The comparable-priced Canon EOS C300 , Sony PXW-FS7, and Blackmagic Design URSA 4.6K cameras are preferred by most cameramen . Most photographers , potential owners of 1D C, prefer the Canon EOS-1D X.
Reviews
Canon EOS-1D C went almost unnoticed by critics and users. Even such authoritative resources as DXOMark and Digital Photography Review did not conduct camera reviews. American cameraman Shane Hurlbut, along with director Po Chan, shot a short film en: The Ticket to present the camera at NAB 2012. He emphasized the presence of Canon log and high detail when shooting in 4K. Thanks to the compact size of the camera, the entire film crew (two actors, a director, an operator and an assistant) was placed in the cab of the Ferris wheel. [fifteen]
Canon provided a copy of the camera to the English director Philip Bloom . He noted that the price of the camera is too high, but due to the lack of competitors in 2013, which could be compared in size, photosensitivity, 4K, lack of moire and aliasing , 1D C looks advantageous. But for use as a video camera, there are not enough monitoring functions, histograms , picking , high-quality audio inputs, SDI output . [16]
BBC freelance cameraman Johnnie Behiri described the camera on the positive side: “In my opinion, this is the first HDSLR camera that can shoot high-definition video in quality that can compete with a good HD camera.” [17]

Firmware Updates
Rollback to previous firmware versions is officially impossible. A feature of the official firmware versions is that they cannot be downloaded from the official site. To update, you must turn in the camera to the service center. [22] In the first firmware versions, a shooting mode of 4096 × 2160 24p was available, then Canon added 4096 × 2160 25p in the firmware version 1.2.0.
| release date | Version | Corrections |
|---|---|---|
| 2015-09-17 | 1.4.0 | Fixed a problem that occurred when the menu item "Pressing the shutter button halfway" configured in the section "C.Fn5: Control"> "Assign Control Menu" is set to only start metering; Depending on the time you press the shutter button halfway, this may cause autofocus. |
| 2015-12-03 | 1.3.9 | Improved autofocus control when shooting in Live View using a wide-angle lens (fixed focal length or zoom). Fixed a bug where shooting with a slow shutter speed (several minutes) leads to the appearance of vertical stripes on the right edge of the captured images (photographs). |
| 2014-06-05 | 1.3.5 | Fixed a linear audio input problem that occurs on some EOS-1D Cs with firmware version 1.3.4 installed and whose serial number has the sixth digit “1”, “2” or “3” on the left. |
| 2014-06-05 | 1.2.0 | Added record 4096 × 2160 25p (for PAL mode). A function to disable the image size selection button has been added. |
